There were also big time performances by a few newcomers to the VISAA that we are also going to recognize as well as our usual weekly award winners. Freshman Alli Pena had 9 aces for Portsmouth Christian in their match against Gateway Christian. It was a career high for the young Outside Hitter. Brooklyn Kavanaugh has burst onto the scene this past week for Guardian Christian Academy. The Royal Knights 8th grader had a career high 14 kills against Grove Christian and totaled 26 kills for the week. Sasha Santana, the 8th grade Pin Hitter for Grove Christian, tied a career high with 5 aces against Guardian Christian. Now, onto the awards:
Defender of the Week: This week’s award goes to two players who had great weeks on defense. Lara Santana, the senior from Grove Christian and Xzone Volleyball Club, had a season high 19 digs against Guardian Christian Academy. Our co-defender is from perennial state powerhouse Stonebridge with their fantastic senior Libero, Abby Hinton Abby Hinton 5'3" | DS/L Stonebridge | 2021 State VA . Abby continues her strong play after a Second Team All State Selection in 2019, helping the Cavaliers with 23 digs, 8 aces and 7 assists while passing with a 95% efficiency on serve receive. Stonebridge continued their winning ways with 2-0 week, sweeping Denbigh Baptist and Atlantic Shores.
Setter of the Week: Emily Hinton, the dynamic freshman from Stonebridge, is our setter of the week. This makes our awards this week a family affair. Emily is the younger sister of Defender of the Week, Abby Hinton Abby Hinton 5'3" | DS/L Stonebridge | 2021 State VA . The 5’5 setter had 8 aces and 14 digs to go with 34 assists on the week. In her first year as part of the setter tandem for Stonebridge, Emily is pairing up with fellow freshman Molly Williams to run the top team in the state’s offense and continuing their winning tradition. They have won three of the last four state championships.
Attacker of the Week: With several standout performances this week, we will also have co-winners for Attacker of the Week. Drew Williams Drew Williams DS/L Stonebridge | 2023 VA , the standout junior from Stonebridge, had a great week for the Cavaliers. The 5’6 Outside Hitter put down 23 kills on 48 attempts with just 3 errors. She added 4 aces and 8 digs for good measure. Drew also surpassed 200 career aces this week with her performance against Atlantic Shores. She hit .417 for the week and continues her stellar performances after being named First Team All State for 2019 season. Our other Attacker of the Week is Victoria Tucker from Portsmouth Christian. The Senior Outside Hitter had 30 kills in 55 swings and 3 errors. She added in 9 digs and 7 aces. She had .491 hitting efficiency and a season high 13 kills against Gateway Christian.
Player of the Week: We have Co-Players of the Week for this week as well. Grace Bickley Grace Bickley 5'9" | OH Portsmouth Christian | 2021 State VA continued to help Portsmouth Christian continue their great 2020 season (9-1) with a dominant all around play. Grace killed 33 balls on 66 swings and added 23 aces. He added 9 digs and .956 receive percentage. Grace is coming off a First Team All State Selection in 2019 and continues her dominant play into her final season. Stonebridge’s fantastic freshman Amelia Matson is our other Player of the Week. The 5’8 newcomer hit .429 on the week with 24 kills, 10 aces and 10 digs on the week. She is building on an impressive 8th grade campaign and is the offensive leader for the Cavaliers and their 11-0 season this year.
Megan James Megan James 5'7" | OH Guardian Christian | 2022 State VA from Guardian had another stellar week with 29 kills and 34 digs as well. Emily Nordwall had 12 digs for Broadwater Christian. Emma Beasley for Portsmouth Christian had 6 aces and 39 assists. Molly Williams of Stonebridge had 26 assists. Kathryn Morgan of Grove Christian had 15 assists. Berkeley Stenger and Hope Parrish of Denbigh Baptist had 14 and 26 digs respectively.
