Continue ReadingClub volleyball season is at full pace and several tournaments were held in Texas this past weekend. Among them was the Skyline Classic #10, which reunited some 17s teams of the state at the Houston Skyline facilities on Saturday.
It was a small field tournament with only 18 teams entered and events like this present a rare opportunity for volleyball fans to spot some hidden gems in the early stages of their careers. Prep Dig was there and will provide our traditional tournament reports during the week.
These are the outside hitters who turned some heads during the event.
Nayeli Tia – HJV 17 Premier – 2022
Nayeli Tia added a lot of firepower to HJV 17 Premier when she joined the club coming from California. The 5’10” outside hitter has long arms and is a good jumper, a combination that makes her offensive game a very strong one. She’s got a lot of power on her right arm and can bounce balls in any direction. Her backcourt skills, which include a lethal serving ability and tremendous talent on defense, complete a very interesting package.
Lexi Higgins – TEXSTAR 17 – HS: Bellville – 2022
Lexi Higgins’ game stood out in a TEXSTAR 17 team that won only one of their three matches in the tournament. The 6’2” outside hitter is very strong at the net as she uses her size and the technique developed playing beach volleyball to score points at ease. Her reach and court vision are extremely helpful when she needs to hit off-the-net sets coming from the backcourt. Her experience in the sand also refined her defensive game, making of Higgins a very prolific passer and defender as well.
Ashley Arnold – HVA Comets 17 Red –HS: Elkins – 2022
Ashley Arnold was probably the most technically-gifted outside hitter in the entire tournament. She played an instrumental role in HVA Comets 17 Red’s campaign, being an effective hitter at the net and providing huge support on the defensive side of the game. A 5’5” lefty, Arnold is very efficient when hitting from the right side too and she has an effective technique to tool the block she can’t find enough space to hit past it.
Delaney Arminger – Catalyst 17 Black – HS: Fort Bend Austin – 2022
Delaney Arminger was the most impressive player in the Catalyst 17 Black team that ended the tournament with a 2-2 win record. The 5’8” outside hitter showed a very complete game during the event, proving to be a powerful and efficient hitter at the net and a very good defender behind the attack line. Arminger was her team’s go-to scoring option and also displayed the ability to score from the service line with a very difficult serve.
