With approximately 10 percent of our population being left-handed, coaches are always hoping to find that “lefty” who can block and swing comfortably from the right side of the court. Here are 3 up and coming left-handed players leading the way.

MaeLea Harmon is a junior from Waterville, Minnesota. She attends Waterville Elysian Morristown High School and plays on the WEM 17-1’s club. At only 5’5’’, she is one of the smallest right side players, but her athleticism makes up for her height. With a great vertical jump and fast arm-swing, she is a strong offensive threat. Likewise, she consistently gets great touches on the block and guides her middles when setting the block against opponent's big outside hitters. Her jumping skills and physical strength continue to the service line where she delivers a powerful jump-serve. MaeLea is a multi-sport athlete for the Buccaneers. She is a top competitor for her school’s track team in the 60m, 100m and long jump (16.375 personal record.)

The next stand-out southpaw is Ashlyn Olson. She attends New London Spicer High School and will graduate in 2021. She is a 5’11’’ freshman and we can’t help but wonder how much taller she will get over the next few years. She is a leader on her club team, Kandi Elite 15-1’s, with the ability to run variety of hits from the right side. Ashlyn demonstrates a strong volleyball IQ with her hitting placement. The power of her cross-court shot is unmatched by players her age and catches the defense on their heels. She can hit down the line and has a great power tip that is hard to read. She is an honor roll student and holds the school record for triple jump. This is one lefty that is already drawing the attention of scouts all over.

Lastly, is seventh grader Rylee Nelson. From Zumbrota-Mazappa High School, Rylee is a 5’1’’ setter that can do it all. She demands attention with her consistent sets, tough float serve, and strong leadership. Her club team, SMV 14-1 black, typically runs a 6-2 offense but often switches to a 5-1 because of her ability to read the blockers and make good choices on offense. She’s developing her skills and learning fast. Also, her defense sets her apart from other setters. She has the competitive drive coaches look for and players desire. Rylee is a three-sport athlete playing volleyball, basketball and softball.
