The Northern Lights Qualifier jam packed with talent and also plenty of Minnesota teams. Mix the two together and you have plenty of Minnesota talent across over 50 courts ages 16s and 17s with three different divisions. Hundreds of players, plenty of college coaches from across the nation, and one of me to trying to capture it all. As a writer I focused mostly on the 17 Open so the noteables will be coming from this division. The talent pool is deep in this state and here are a few out of many that stood out in the 17 Open Division. I could probably write a five part series on this, but of the noteables a few have committed to some major programs while others definitely have the potential to play at the next level. With a large number of Division 2 and Division 3 schools in the state there is definitely a spot for these players to continue their education and volleyball careers in their backyard.

Syra Tanchin - OH - MN Select 17-1 - STMA

Class of 2019 - Committed To North Dakota State

MN Select has flashes of greatness with some high quality wins over NORCO (Colorado) and Adrenaline 17 Rox (Iowa) and Tanchin played a major role in some of those victories. A high flying outside who just committed to the Bison of North Dakota state, Tanchin is able to use the block, find the open spot, or find a way to score points on the pin for MN Select. Tanchin along with fellow Division 1 commit, Maizy Jackson who is heading to UNI are the go to athletes for MN Select that are always competitive in any tournament they are in. Some of their other 2019 athletes in their club are playing on the 18s team which finished in a tie for 5th in the USAV Open Division this past weekend in Anaheim.

Jing McIntosh-Yee - OH - Minnesota Volleyball Academy 17 Elite - Minnetonka

McIntosh-Yee is a crafty outside for MVA that is an incredibly scrappy team. With nobody on their team taller than 6’1 they depend on athleticism and scrappiness which is exactly what McIntosh-Yee does on the pin. In her match verses Wisconsin Volleyball Academy I saw her use the block and then next shot go extreme deep corner that was perfectly placed. She has hit with the best of them, but her ability to score points in a creative way is definitely her way of helping the team.

Alaina Bohrer - OH - M1 17-1 - Edina

Bohrer is an outside hitter with an aggressive approach to the game. With a loose arm and a high contact point, she is a threat each time she touches the ball. M1 had a tough match against Adrenaline 17 Rox losing in three sets on Friday afternoon to knock them out of Gold contention, but was also able to beat Metro VBC which has qualified as an Open team. Bohrer and M1 is a team that will continue to improve and is great competition among the top club teams in the Twin Cities area. Bohrer is definitely a small D1/D2 school would be able to catch and develop at the next level.

Erika Butte - DS - Northern Lights 17-1 - Alden-Conger

Butte is a defensive specialist for Northern Lights 17-1 and comes from Alden-Conger, a small high school just outside of Albert Lea where I35 and I90 intersect. Butte plays alongside libero Marissa Hinkle who is heading to UCLA. With the training Butte receives at Northern Lights and being on the 17-1 team definitely puts her in the Division 1/Division 2 tier to play libero at a very high level. A solid all around player, Butte would be a hidden gem from the small high school who would be a great fit at the next level.

Kate Achenbach - RS - MN Select 17-1 - Osseo

Achenbach is a dynamic pin hitter that plays on the right side for MN Select. At 6’2, she is a solid match up going up against the opposing teams outside hitter. She is also a legit offense threat for MN Select which is a team that feeds off of ball control with middles right around six foot and extremely strong outsides. Achenbach is someone with a high reach and contact point that can score points when called upon.

Peyton Seuss - RS/MB - Northern Lights 17-1 - Kasson Mantorville

Committed to Wake Forest

Northern Lights has the big names heading to Nebraska, Iowa, and USC, but Seuss was definitely an X factor in plenty of matches for Northern Lights. Seuss has the ability to play all the way around as a right side and has the strength and athleticism to attack off of one foot or take a big swing from the right side. As good as the outsides are for NL, there is so much balance on the front line which is ultimately what makes them a solid team for every match, they don’t rely on one player. Seuss, who comes from Kasson Mantorville High School, a relatively small high school in the Rochester area will be a definite impact player at the next level in the ACC at Wake Forest.
