2A Semi-State Teams And Players To Watch

<p>There hasn’t been a perfect final four for me this fall. In 4A, I failed to mention Castle (30-2) back in August. In the 3A, West Lafayette was left off of my initial top ten at the beginning of the season. The same goes for 2A today, as two teams mentioned here surprised me by their high level of play. Here are all four, and the players that got them there.</p> <p><strong>Andrean (30-5)</strong></p> <p>The consensus #1 team in 2A for the majority of the season has clearly been the Fighting 59ers, and what a season it has been. Playing in "the region" has its advantages, as you can always schedule the toughest teams to prepare for an October run (read: Penn in 4A). That was proven true in the regional final, as Andrean erased any hope from a tough South Central squad (28-7) Saturday evening in straight sets. Pin attackers <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="108093" first="Angelina" last="Majchrowicz"] (’22, 5-9 OH)</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="110517" first="Marin" last="Sanchez"] (’24, 5-11 OH)</strong> get fed regularly from do-everything setter <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="103331" first="Maddie" last="Kmetz"] (’22, 5-9 S), </strong>and this just might be Andrean’s title to lose.</p> <p><strong>South Adams (28-8)</strong></p> <p>Andrean’s opponent hasn’t dropped a set yet in the post-season, and might have a tougher time doing so on Saturday. No matter, because the Starfires are playing their best ball to date, riding a nine match win streak heading into the semi-state. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="118191" first="Carlie" last="Sealscott"] (’22, 5-7 OH/DS)</strong> paced SA in the regional final against Madison-Grant (30-6) with 14 kills and 17 digs to notch yet ANOTHER double-double this fall. To keep up with Andrean’s pins, Carli is going to need some help. Insert <strong>Macy Pries (’23, 5-8 OH), </strong>who is a nice complement that can take some pressure off of her fellow outside. </p> <p><strong>Western Boone (26-8)</strong></p> <p>The Stars are that team that no one wants to play. Athletic up and down the roster, they schedule like they want to win the whole thing, earning wins over Park Tudor (twice, including the sectional final), Covenant Christian (twice, including the regional final), 3A Tri-West and 1A Final Four member Lafayette Central Catholic. In their well-balanced attack, there are four Stars that average over two kills per set, paced by <strong>Maddie Hawkins (’22, 5-6 OH/DS). </strong>Miss Hawkins, the all-time digs leader at WeBo, is a primary-passing six-rotation OH, pounding 10 kills and scooping 11 digs for her NINTH double-double of the season. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="154814" first="Raegan" last="Durbin"] (’25, 5-10 OH),</strong> picked a great time to have her career-best match, crushing 15 kills and hitting over .300 in their four-set win over Covenant Christian on Saturday.</p> <p><strong>North Posey (27-5)</strong></p> <p>The Vikings are the only team from south of I-70 to make it into this elite group in 2A. With their epic reverse-sweep win over perennial thorn Tecumseh, the sky’s the limit for this group. <strong>Julia Fullop (’22, 5-7 OH)</strong> careered in that match, putting 19 balls away when the Vikings needed her most. Put three kills per set with her two digs per set, and you can tell immediately who the go-to is for NP. With WeBo’s balance, however, Julia will need a little help, hopefully coming from fellow senior <strong>Claire Koester (’22, 5-8 OH),</strong> who’s an athletic, basketball-first stud. Here’s to hoping the two can carry North Posey to new heights on Saturday.</p>
