I have been fortunate enough to get out to matches in both states and have seen all of these players live! This weekend will be even more from Minnesota with tournaments in Burnsville with the A and AA Showcase as well as Apple Valley. There are plenty more out there, but for those colleges that are looking to beef up their roster or find the next hidden gem we have a few of them for you at Prep Dig!
Carissa Sundholm – Outside Hitter – Wisconsin Lutheran
Sundholm is quite the duo on the outside with Julia Treichel for Wisco. A six rotation outside that just recorded her 1,000th career kill this past weekend at the Charger Rally is someone who should be very high on the radar. With her overall athleticism and ability to adjust her style of play fits the college level perfectly. A state qualifier in track, she could even pull double duty.
Jenna Chaussee – Outside Hitter – Chilton
Chaussee is the reigning conference player of the year for Chilton and has 185 kills on the year so far in 2018. Chilton has been hovering around the top ten which plenty of credit goes to Chaussee and Senior setter Alysha Brickl who has over 400 assists and close to 200 digs. Chaussee has a live arm and a variety of shots to score points in a hurry.
Katelyn Sesolak – Middle Blocker – Arrowhead
Sesolak is a Senior leader for the #1 Warhawks who are off to a blistering start to the 2018 season 29-3 with an extremely tough schedule. With 132 kills with a .339 hitting percentage, Sesolak forces the defense to respect her while pin hitters Aubrey Hamilton, Elise Schneider, and Josie Salzman terminate on the outside. I was also able to see Sesolak play at the Badger Team camp in July and she was was a major scoring threat with a depleted roster due to injuries.
Kaleigh Roepke – Outside Hitter – Waunakee
Waunakee has the heavy hitters in Kianna Schmitt heading to Creighton and Milla Malik, an outside hitter going to Buffalo, but Kaleigh Roepke has emerged as solid six rotation outside hitter who can score points, serve receive, and is a high IQ player. Plus, she knows what it’s like to be on a successful, winning team at the club and high school level. Really good teams have two options, but great teams always have three (or more!).
Sarah Malone – Libero – Waunakee
I have seen Sarah Malone make so many rally saving, momentum changing plays for Capital and for Waunakee. Whether its taking pace off of a hard swing or serve receiving on point she is so steady and dependable. This might be a unique observation, but she reads the first contact extremely well, meaning if its a hard dig from a teammate she is always ready for it to go off the court or get a touch as it falls into the middle, again a rally saving play that changes momentum.
Maddie Crowley – Outside Hitter – Ashwaubenon
Crowley came on strong this summer and isn’t stopping as she is one of the leaders for the Jaguars and their 19-4 record, one of their best starts in years. Crowley has a future at the college level as an outside or she would be a great libero or DS with a swing out of the backrow. With right around 150 kills and 150 digs so far this season she is definitely one to put on a list and be in contact with!
Elle Schult – Middle Blocker – Oconomowoc
Schult brings a physical presence to the net and a nasty serve from the backline. At 6’3, Schult is able to put up a big block and run a variety of tempo sets from shoots to slides. A solid connection with setter Tayler Alden will continue to grow stronger as these two have played together for Oconomowoc as well as VC United. Ocon has a variety of youth and experience and with Schult in the middle they are always able to get a touch on a big swing against their opponents.
Minnesota
Emma Roethler – Middle Blocker – Northfield
Northfield has quite the frontline this year which has landed them among the top ten in Minnesota’s largest class. Roethler is a middle who is extremely physical getting from pin to pin. Offensively she can run a quick tempo and connects well with her setter. With a quick snap for a swing the ball is down before she is done jumping.
Lindsey Johnson – Right Side – Forest Lake
Johnson is aggressive on the right side putting up a solid block and is very terminal with her swing. A dynamic athlete she can hit from anywhere on the court. She definitely has the ability to play at the next level that could swing from any position with a variety combinations.
Ally Gruber – Outside Hitter – BBE
Gruber is definitely the go to point scorer and leader on the court. Watching her you just can tell others look to her to lead by example and has the presence of “Everything is going to be ok”. An aggressive swing and uses the blocker to her advantage, BBE will be a solid threat in Class A this year who was one of the top finishers out of their Division at the Southwest Minnesota Challenge.
Bailey Berge – Libero – Kasson-Mantorville
The KoMets are going to be a threat to make a postseason run and surpass a quarterfinal loss at the state tournament from a year ago. With Peyton Suess in the lineup, you can never count out KM with the Wake Forest recruit who can score in every rotation. However, they have a really solid libero in Bailey Berge. Berge does what all liberos should in being able to communicate, antipate/read well, and put the ball on point to where the offense can be in system.
Morgan Kockelman – Setter – Minneota
Great hands! Kockelman, who stands are 5’9 runs an offense who depends on tempo and efficiency to score points for the #2 in Class A Minneota Vikings. Kockelman can push from pin to pin making something really difficult look relatively easy. She can run a quick to the middle from the ten foot line. She can also attack and plays really solid defense out of right back.
Lydia Sussner – Middle Blocker – Minneota
At 5’10, Sussner is a point scoring machine. There is no shot she can’t make or find a way for the ball to hit the floor on the other side. She always has herself in position to attack which can mean a multitude of options including the zone 4 tip, the deep throw to a corner, or a swing straight down on the ten footline. This Minneota team is so fun to watch with how well they play together and the gritty defense behind it all. They really make it a simple game, but executing and not making errors. If only it were that easy.
