Watertown Tips Waunakee In Battle of Top Teams

<p>One of this week's marquee match-ups pitted two of the state's best teams, Waunakee and Watertown on Oct. 11 in the Badger Challenge. Advantage Watertown. </p>
<p>The Goslings came into the Warriors' gym and notched a mild upset. Watertown, ranked seventh in Prep Dig Wisconsin's All-Division Top Ten, rolled to a 3-1 victory. Waunakee took the first set, 25-19, but Watertown swept the next three, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-19.</p>
<p>The Goslings improved to 39-5, while Waunakee, ranked No. 1 in the poll, fell to 40-4. Both teams have already wrapped up conference titles, Watertown in the Badger South and Waunkee in the North, so the Oct. 11 duel was a chance to see who reigns supreme in a clash of two very talented squads. </p>
<p>Sheridan Dettman, a senior libero for Watertown, stepped up with one of her finest matches of the season. Dettman was a defensive ace, hustling for 32 digs. She has a remarkable 528 digs this season. </p>
<p>Brianne Korducki, Watertown's offensive spark plug, had 21 kills. Defensively, the 5-11 senior chipped in with six digs. Korducki, who plays both in the middle and outside, has 337 kills for the season. </p>
<p>Alayna Westenberg, a 5-11 sophomore, has really emerged for the Goslings this season. Against Waunakee, Westenberg had 15 kills and two blocks. For the season, Westenberg has 205 kills and 40 blocks. </p>
<p>Watertown's offense runs through setter Isabelle Schauer and the junior had a strong outing last Thursday. Schauer posted 38 assists, giving her 914 for the season. She also recorded four services aces. </p>
<p>While the home loss was a stinging blow for Waunakee, the Warriors did have notable performances from top players. </p>
<p>Kiana Schmitt, one of the state's best seniors, finished with 12 kills. The Creighton recruit is nearing 300 kills for the season (295). In addition, Schmitt had two blocks and with 95 total blocks will likely finish with more than 100 for the season. </p>
<p>Junior Milla Malik, who has committed to Buffalo, had 13 kills. Malik, also with 295 kills, is not just an offensive force. Against Watertown, the 5-10 outside hitter had a season-high 20 digs. For the season, Malik has 293. </p>
<p>Senior Kaleigh Roepke contributed with 10 kills and has 233 on the season. Defensively, she had 15 digs. Libero Sarah Malone, another talented senior, finished with 15 digs. </p>
<p>The Warriors also received a standout performance from Summer Schwenn, their senior setter. Schwenn had a season-high 15 digs and 20 assists. </p>
<p>With the postseason starting next week, both of these powerhouses have the components to make extended playoff runs. The question is, will it end in Green Bay? </p>
