1 Reach out
Talk to coaches that were at tryouts. Ask what they may have been looking for. Chances are, the position you play may not have been needed. Seek advice for ways to improve. There may be skills that are still underdeveloped compared to others there. Then, reach out to other clubs and tryouts. Don’t be afraid to reach out to club directors you know and don’t know. There are many things that fall through behind the scenes after tryouts and you never know if a simple email can get you in the door.
2 Re-evaluate
Take time to re-evaluated your game. Doing this by yourself or a parent can be very helpful. Some time spent reflecting can open your eyes to a number of things. Reconsider your position or the way you market yourself at tryouts: are you timid, shy, trying for a specific team or position. Thinking about the way you approach tryouts will help take responsibility for your own role in the process.
3 Respect
Now, you have no choice but to respect the decisions and move on. It is totally normal to feel disappointed, discouraged and defeated. After you accept the result of tryouts, figure out how you are going to pick yourself back up. Consider all options. Could you still play on a smaller club team, or a team that doesn’t start until later in the spring? Do your skills need some improvement? If so, look into private lesson.
Consider your physical strengths. Do you need more weight training or speed and agility? Depending on your age: consider getting involved with coaching. Players can learn so much from coaching and there is alway a need for more qualified coaches.
Lastly, remember nearly every athlete will experience some type of disappointment during tryouts, but how you bounce back is what matters most!
