Continue Reading2018 is now in the past. The Class of 2021 has gotten more established in the varsity ranks of high school volleyball. Aside from making the varsity team, many have played in hundreds of club matches for top teams in the state. Some of these sophomores made an impact freshman year and some made their débuts in their sophomore season. Some sophomore standouts may have come as a surprise, and others we expected, but definitely keep your eye on these players and how they will contribute to their club teams this season.
Alexis Boling – 6’0 – Middle Blocker – Waukesha West – Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold
West will graduate some key pieces, but they will also have Boling around which to build. She made a huge impact for the Wolverines in 2018, leading the balanced attack with 393 kills. Boling can hit a variety of shots to work the entire court. She has a natural feel for the game and knows when to swing all out or strategically tip. Boling landed on a solid club team this fall and should be a force to reckon with.
Anna WolfAnna Wolf – 6’3 – Middle Blocker – River Falls – Committed To Minnesota
River Falls graduated middle blocker Marissa Stickman in 2018 to play at Illinois State. Wolf immediately took charge in the middle, and River Falls reloaded to make another state appearance. She has a multitude of shots she can use, sees the court extremely well, and with a high reach, she can go over a big block. Wolf also moves well laterally and presents a huge block for opponents.
Brooke Mosher – 6’0 – Setter/Right Side – Waterloo – FC Elite 18 Navy – Committed To Illinois
Mosher had a major impact in her freshman season of varsity action with over 400 kills and over 400 assists. She managed to beat that her sophomore season with over 500 kills. Mosher will join some big name recruits this upcoming club season with FC Elite 18 Navy.
Cora Behnke – 6’0 – Outside Hitter – Oconto – FC Elite 16 Navy
Behnke recorded over 300 kills in 2018. She tallied about four per set, and she was definitely the leader for the Blue Devils, earning Honorable Mention All-State Honors. Behnke wasn’t the only sophomore to make an impact for Oconto. Emma Walkowiak (5’6 – Setter) was another impactful player with 332 assists, 141 digs, and 42 aces as 1 setter in a 6-2 offense in her second season of varsity play. This will be a team to watch out for in the years to come.
Josie HalbeibJosie Halbeib – 6’2 – Setter/Right Side – Sun Prairie – Capital Adidas 16 Adidas
Halbeib is fun to watch, since she is such a strong all-around player. In 2018 she recorded 679 assists, 179 kills, and 157 digs. Halbeib has height and athleticism and would be a tremendous add to any competitive program as a setter or a right side hitter.
Lizzie Binder – 6’3 – Pin Hitter – Sheboygan North – Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold
Binder is strong, athletic, and she packs a heavy punch from the pin. In 2018 she led the Golden Raiders in kills with 416, and that is no joke for a sophomore! Binder will be on a solid Sting 16 Gold team this year with the likes of Anna Holland of Waukesha West (Committed to Seton Hall) and Emme Bullis out of Whitewater (Committed to Minnesota).
Payton AddinkPayton Addink – 6’1 – Outside Hitter – Sun Prairie – Capital Adidas 16 Adidas
Addink is a strong 6-rotation outside. She helped the Cardinals to the state tournament with a very young lineup and three solid sophomore contributors in Addink, Halbeib, and middle Maggie Allaman (5’10). This season for club she will play with Halbeib and Allaman on the Capital Adidas 16s team.
Samantha Naber – 5’7 – Libero – Burlington – Sky High – Committed To Marquette
Naber ran the defense for Burlington and was key in defending their D1 state title. She’s a strong server and always kept the Demons in play with Emily Alan (2020) in the middle to terminate. Naber has stood out since her freshman year with her strong serve-receive and relentless pursuit.
