Since I’m writing about defensive players, I am talking about the digs, super dives, and saves from attacks. These players make amazing saves that look unsavable. They create miracle plays while defending their side of the court. Good defensive players do their job by denying the opposing team from scoring. Watching these players react with agility and speed makes them perfect for their position.
Ally Du
Ally Du
Ally Du has some amazing one-hand digs that she can pop up perfectly. She is not afraid to get on the floor, diving to save a ball. Her solid platform makes serve receive passing controlled. Her defensive floor skills allow her to cover a wide range of the court. Du gets to free balls and starts the offense with her pass to the setter. She knows how to visually track her opponents and can adjust to receive an attack or cover the tip. Ally Du plays her position well with her quick reaction and speed on the court.
Kaili Ah San
Kaili Ah San
Kaili Ah San protects and defends the areas on the court that she covers. On the defensive side, she uses her quick reflexes and arms to dig a ball and keep it in play. When faced with a powerful attack, she neutralizes the other side’s offensive play. Ah San has good court coverage by being able to move quickly on the court to the ball. She controls her passes with a solid platform. Ah San plays her position well with her timing and quick reflexes.
Annah Legaspi
Annah Legaspi
Annah Legaspi stays focused and reads everything going on the other side of the net. She is aggressive and under control when she lunges, rolls, or dives for the ball. Her reflexes and good coordination help stop the opposing team from scoring. Her proper ball contact creates perfect passes which are important for the setter to get off a good set. Legaspi has a good bump set that can find its targeted location. She plays her position well by communicating and has a quick response to powerful hits.
Emma Gillis
Emma Gillis
Emma Gillis gets down and ready when she’s playing defense. She knows how to intercept an attack by digging or diving for the ball. Her quick reaction allows her to get right back up without missing a beat. She gets in a low position, reading the hitters. Gillis is prepared to dig, dive or do what’s needed to keep the ball in play. She plays her position well by being focused and quick to react.
Miliani Villarreal Miliani Villarreal 5’8″ | DS/L Vista Murrieta | 2024 State CA has amazing reflexes and can adjust to changes on the court as they happen. Her pursuit of the ball is relentless. Reading the ball makes her know where the other team plans to move or hit. She transitions and puts herself in the best spot on the court to receive the ball. Villarreal has made amazing dives, digs, and passes on target. She is quick with covering areas in back row and can get down and up off the floor fast. Villarreal is good at her position by being athletic and resilient on the court.

Yanizza Gutierrez
Yanizza Gutierrez is a player who brings good energy to the game. She adjusts to changes on the court by being able to react to an attack or a tip. She runs, dives, digs, and slides showing defensive pressure by saving balls from falling. Her ability to remain confident when a play might go wrong is important for her team’s success. Gutierrez covers her hitters and is ready for an overpass that might come her way. She plays her position well by having court awareness and the speed to defend. She has a passing rate of 1.89, digs per set at 2.5, and an impressive 38 aces so far this season.
