Setter Spotlight: “Small” Setters

<p> Over the last five years we have seen a change in the setting position: taller setters who are also an attacking threat. While having a tall setter can be a great asset for a team, there are still many advantages to having a true setter, that just may be a little shorter. Here are a few of our favorite setters who prove height is not a requirement for this position:</p>
<p><strong>Maddie Converse</strong> has already become a well-known player in Southern Minnesota. As the starting setter for Kasson Mantorville she stepped up and helped lead a troop of amazing athletes to victories over Stewartville Tigers and a state tournament run. She appears to be longer than her listed height of 5'7''. Her movements on the court feel effortless and she makes her job look easy. This winter she was the leader on strong SMV 16-1 team.</p>
<p>Another up and coming sophomore is <strong>Olivia Foss</strong> out of Stillwater, MN. Foss has been showing improvement working hard as a member of Mizuno M1 15-2's team. A solid athlete who's strengths are her soft hands, defense, and work ethic. She is a setter who works hard to make her teammates look better even if it means she doesn't get the recognition she deserves.</p>
<p> Sometimes height can be the thing that helps coaches separate players onto a 1's or 2's team. That is likely the case for <strong>Olivia Johnson. </strong> Last year she was the setter for MN Select 16-2's but this year her skills landed her a spot on the 17-1's team. Their roster generously lists her height as 5'10. It is important to remember that these somewhat shorter setters may end up growing another inch or two into their junior and senior year. So many players work for years to make the top team and Johnson has paid her dues. We can't wait to see what she does during her senior year at Wayzata High School. </p>
