Dear Prep Dig, Some Local Colleges Are Interested…
Dear Prep Dig,
I am going to be a Senior this upcoming school year and there are some local colleges interested in me, but I’m just not quite sure I want to stay close to home. I’ve been going to some of their camps and am familiar with the school, but I’m just not really sure. What are some things I should think about in making a decision?

If you want to play college volleyball, there will always be a place to play, it’s just a matter of what the right fit is for you! I think it is great that you are opening up your options, even if that means staying close to home.
A college is always going to want to keep the best athletes close to home. Why not right? Those athletes are great to bring fans in the stands, be an athlete other local kids want to play with, and also be somewhat of a local ambassador to the program by bringing in kids from their hometown to volleyball camps and other campus functions. I wouldn’t rule these colleges out (no matter how much your mom or dad are telling you to apply). Like any situation, college is what you make it. You may have driven by campus plenty of times, but it is much different when you are on the campus and become a student. Whether you are two hours from home or ten minutes, you are ultimately the one who decides how often you go home. Your parents and family will respect your boundaries and it would be really nice to have them in the stands for games. They can also be a second home for plenty of players on the team because much like club and high school, everyone becomes one big happy family by the end of the season.
Above all else, make sure that you are picking the school based on the academic programs you are interested. If you really want to go into engineering and there isn’t an engineering program, it probably isn’t in your best interest to go there. Depending on the size of the school and the level of play, there may be additional opportunities to get involved on campus outside of volleyball. Do your research, seek help from those you trust, and it will all work out.
All The Best!
