Heading into their Junior season however, they will be some of the top players to watch in their conference, district, and the state. Some have had breakout club seasons, others have changed positions, and some a different high school. Here are some athletes who will be looking to breakout and potentially make an All State team this upcoming season in Iowa.
Macy Vanfossan and Zoe Rus- Class 2A – Underwood
Underwood is going to be tough to contend with in Southwest Iowa behind Vanfossan and Rus, who had a breakout club season as well as productive summer. Together they combined for just under 600 kills and will continue to be key players for the Eagles as they will look to get to Cedar Rapids. Southwest Iowa is always loaded with talent with the likes of Treynor and Tri-Center Neola. With a deep postseason run these two will be at the top of the ballot late this fall.
Alysen Dexter – Class 3A – Des Moines Christian
Dexter will be back with plenty of experience having played another year with Iowa High Performance. A six rotation outside, Dexter will be back along with Megan Riddle who will be a Senior for the Lions. Central Iowa is going to be a tough area to get out of for Class 3A with lots of depth. Dexter will be one of the top athletes and can score points in any rotation.
Paige Kisley – Class 3A – Osage
Kisley may be one of the best athletes in all of Class 3A. A star on the track, Kisley was a big impact player for Osage in their run to a third straight state tournament. With the ability to score on either pin, Kisley has an aggressive attack and monster vertical where she can hit over the block or use the block to her advantage. Osage will be bringing back some big talent in Dani Johnson who was All State as a Sophomore as well as some Class of 2022 athletes with big time potential.
Jadyn Jondle – Class 3A – Clarion-Goldfield-Dows
Extremely solid, Jondle played such a big part in CGD’s run to the state tournament last fall. The incoming Junior was a reliable defender for Six Pack this club season and will be the same this fall. A lot of range and is always under control, Jondle will get a first contact in system to let the likes of Morgan Middleton put a ball away.
Taylor Grinley – Class 3A/4A – Gilbert
Gilbert is going to be a threat to make a run this season with the likes of Thea Rotto and Haleigh Hadley back who combined for over 500 kills. Grinley will be dishing to these two hitters, but not only can Grinley put a ball on point, but she is a threat at the net as well. She knows how to attack and can also put up a solid block as well. Gilbert is always hovering around Class 3A/4A, either way they will be a threat to get to Cedar Rapids.
Elyse Winter – Class 4A – Xavier
Winter will be coming over from Cedar Rapids Kennedy, she also is playing on the pin instead of the middle. A breakout club season with Iowa Rockets, Winter will be a six rotation player who can score anywhere. Combine her with Creighton commit, Eve Magill and setter Jaz Yamilkoski and it will be another high powered offense for Xavier who fell just short of a state title last year losing to Dubuque Wahlert in the final.
Emma Schubert – Class 3A – Assumption
Schubert is a six rotation outside who has a really active arm and is an aggressive attacker. Assumption dropped a tough five set match to Osage in the first round of the state tournament, but the Knights will be back with a squad who is very offensive with multiple athletes who can score points.
Lauren Schrock – Class 3A – Mount Vernon
Schrock has committed to Iowa and will be playing for Mount Vernon this fall after attending Solon her first two years of high school. A dynamic athlete who can play on the left or right side, Schrock may be one of the hardest hitters with a fast arm to really blast away to score points. Mount Vernon has the makings of quite the squad for this fall after advancing to the state semifinals last season in Class 3A.
Natalie Welch – Class 3A – Mount Vernon
Welch had a big time club season, being apart of the Eastern Iowa Xtreme squad that won a National Title at USAV in 17 National. A middle blocker who can get from pin to pin, she hit all the tempos as a middle, but could also swing on the pin if needed. With her ability to dominate at the net, she can change the game.
Layanna Green – Class 5A – Waukee
Green was on the Waukee squad that qualified for the state tournament in 2018, but will play a bigger role this upcoming season receiving a bulk of the sets out of the middle along with Kate Nelson, the South Dakota State commit on the outside. This offseason Green won a state title in the high jump for Waukee and was also a big time impact athlete for Central Iowa Select . Class 5A is loaded with talent heading to some elite college programs and Green is right in that category.
