To start off the summer, teams head to nationals, come back and pick up with their high school leagues with camps and leagues, some head to high performance, and within a flash there might be one last get away before official practice starts (which would be Monday, August 19). Here is a quick glance back at who won the summer.
Sting 16 White with their 3rd place trophy from AAU NationalsMilwaukee Sting 16s
The Milwaukee Sting 16s with their Gold, Black, and White teams had quite a nationals. Sting 16 Gold went on to finish in the final eight of USAV Open, the only team outside of California and Texas to be in the Gold Bracket. Mckenna Wucherer took home All American honors. 16 Black and 16 White had a huge run over their four days at AAU Nationals in Orlando, both finishing in the final four of their divisions. These athletes from the Class of 2021 had a huge year with plenty of wins, lots of development, and momentum built heading into the 2019 high school season.
Howards Grove
Howards Grove was one match short of reaching the state tournament last year. An athletic, ball control dominated team with the addition of 2023 Badger recruit Saige Damrow at libero added to the mix makes for even more depth at first contact. This squad had quite a day at the Badger Team Camp where they were able to beat the likes of Arrowhead and Omaha Duchesne, a top team in Nebraska for the title. This was done without Dayton commit Karissa Kaminski who was at USA High Performance where she was part of the A1 USA Team that took home a title as well.
Oconomowoc
This was no surprise that Oconomowoc was able to win the Prep Dig Summer League held at Milwaukee Sting. With experience coming back as well as All State setter Tayler Alden, a Division 1 backcourt, and electric pins they have solidified themselves as a front runner in Wisconsin’s largest class. The big clash will happen opening weekend when they compete in the Joust, held at Homestead High School with some of the top teams in the state.
Brookfield Central
BC was the winner of the Marquette Team Camp and will be one of the contenders in the ever so loaded section with Sussex Hamilton, Arrowhead, Cedarburg, Germantown, and DSHA. Senior Maddie Weyker has been in the lineup her whole career on the outside, but Mckenna Wucherer and Morgan Daugherty are no longer Freshman and have the year of experience to really dominate the high school ranks.
Sun Prairie
The Cardinals are back. With a taste of postseason success they will be coming back for more. Lead by Senior outside KJ McNabb along with a strong core of returners they will be a dangerous team all season long. They came into the Capital Summer League as a six seed and blazed their way to a title, defeating Watertown in the championship. The two teams will potentially see each other again at the Sun Prairie Invite opening weekend.
Wausau West
West is going to be one of the teams to watch this upcoming fall after a strong 2018 season and winning the Marathon Summer League over Merrill. Robyn Kirsch will be back for West on the outside where she can flat out fly to score points. West will go against some top competition opening weekend at the Menomonie Sprawl with the likes of River Falls, Oshkosh West, and state returners in Grantsburg, Mosinee, and Clayton.
The Class of 2021
The summer started with the Class of 2021 silent, meaning no communication with college coaches, but after June 15 all lines of communication were open. After the camp season finished up, athletes starting making their verbals. Here are some noteable Class of 2021 commits:
