Continue ReadingAt Prep Dig we typically try not write about players until they have reached high school, and since the 2019 season is underway, we would like to unveil our 2023 Watch List where we unveil just some of the top players in the freshman class. Some have wasted no time making an impact on their varsity squads. Here is just a peek at a few from the Class of 2023.
Anika TorgersonAnika Torgerson – 6’1 – Setter/Outside Hitter – Turtle Lake
Torgerson is a brightly shining diamond in the northern rough. She is a strong all-around player and can take a terminal swing from the outside, solid in serve-receive, and has great hands with a clean release as a setter. Turtle Lake puts Torgerson in some big-time roles as she will set, but could (and usually does at one point or another) play any position on the court. Turtle Lake has had their struggles the past few seasons but typically holds their own in the Lakeland Central Conference and won state titles in 1993, 1994, and 1995.
Karissa Fortune – 5’11 – Outside Hitter – Appleton North
Fortune is a 5’11 outside hitter who played with FC Elite 14 Navy and was a terminal attacker from either pin or the backrow. With elite training from FC Elite, Fortune has been playing against top teams in the nation over the past club season and has already stepped into a big role for Appleton North.
Kindyl Kilar – 5’10 – Outside Hitter – Whitewater
Kilar isn’t the biggest in the gym, but she can bring the heat. This outside hitter from Whitewater is an incredible athlete and a fast arm. Kilar made the Badger Region High Performance National Select team that had a strong outing in Fort Lauderdale in July. She is so versatile, and that’s just one of the things that makes her so dangerous.
Morgan KealyMorgan Kealy – 5’9 – Setter – River Falls
With her older sister recovering from an injury, Kealy gets to run the offense for the River Falls powerhouse. She is athletic, has great hands, and has her sister in her corner coaching her along. At 5’9, Kealy holds her own at the net and can get creative when in a crunch. River Falls has been dominant out of their sectional but will look to get back to the state tournament again with a roster full of big commits.
Saige Damrow – 5’8 – Libero/Outside Hitter – Howards Grove – Committed To Wisconsin
Howards Grove is about to explode from all the talent they have right now. They already have Karissa Kaminski (Dayton commit), the swing of Emily Bruckshen, stellar setting from Emma Baierl, and another top defender with Myka Roethal. Then they get Damrow, too!? It almost isn’t fair! Damrow is athletic, energetic, scrappy, and reads the hitters extremely well. With a high volleyball IQ and the ability to defend and serve- receive, she becomes a solid candidate as a pin hitter in the high school arena.
Savannah Spees – 5’8 – Pin Hitter – Wausau East
Spees led Wisconsin Ice 14 Purple team and is a solid all-around player who could play on either pin, set, or even be a libero. At 5’8, Spees is extremely athletic and physical at the net. She is the type of player that takes an aggressive approach and swing, but still pulls out the finesse play to score points.
#10 Sydney BartelsSydney Bartels – 5’9 – Middle Blocker – Freedom
Freedom has really been coming up with some stellar athletes lately. After a solid club season with FC Elite, Bartels is ready to show WIAA what she’s got. She doesn’t look like an overpowering middle, but she is smart, strong, and uses a variety of methods to score. When you watch her, it’s hard to believe she is only a freshman with such awareness, a high volleyball IQ, and poise which helps her come through in those clutch moments.
