She can fire a hard cross, a clean line shot, or a sharp cut when the set and timing line up, and she is just as comfortable out of system, using her jump and power to find open floor with a well placed tip or roll shot. Against six foot and taller blockers who do not always give her the swing she wants, she has built an attack with answers for whatever the block takes away.

She describes intensity as something she leads with rather than talks about. She carries a lesson from Coach Chad at UCSC close: no one cares what you can do offensively until they show they care enough to play defense hard. She lives that out by diving, running, and digging every ball she can reach, and she believes that standard raises the level of everyone around her. A hitter who can score from multiple spots on the floor and who sets the defensive tone for her team without needing to say a word is exactly the kind of two way threat coaches look for at the pin.

Her summer is full in the best sense. She is training for USA Track and Field Junior Olympics in the final week of July, which means four weeks of two hour plus throwing sessions layered on top of her strength training, along with the occasional camp and beach volleyball for fun and conditioning. She is also taking two college courses at UCSC to strengthen her academic profile and finishing German 2 through BYU.

Abigail Wunderlich believes the outside hitter position comes with an expectation to embrace the biggest moments. “Serve at me. Hit at me. Set me.” That mentality has helped shape her identity, but what she believes is making the biggest difference for her team has less to do with attacking and more to do with becoming a stronger leader.

Abigail described all the little moments that happen between points. Calling teammates off a shanked ball. Letting hitters know where the second ball is going. Reading opposing setters and hitters. Helping teammates recognize open areas of the court. Making sure communication never stops. She credits her years as a middle blocker for helping her see the game from different perspectives, and that experience has strengthened both her court awareness and the confidence she brings to every rally.

Coming from a background in Olympic weightlifting and track and field, Abigail has spent years competing in sports where every attempt happens with everyone watching. Those experiences taught her that mistakes are inevitable, but they should never define the competitor. She also shared that her parents, both former college athletes, have always measured success by effort instead of results. That perspective has helped her compete aggressively without allowing volleyball to become her entire identity.

This season, transitioning from middle blocker to outside hitter has challenged nearly every part of her defensive game. She has invested countless repetitions improving her foot speed, platform angles, recovery from the floor, and range in the back court. The work has been demanding, but Abigail embraces that challenge the same way she approaches pressure: by trusting the preparation she has put in long before match day.

Between college camps, and pursuing qualification for the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics while navigating club tryouts, Abigail will continue balancing two sports at a high level. No matter where the summer takes her, one thing seems certain. She is determined to keep finding ways to become the type of teammate who asks for the ball when the match is on the line.

Abigail competed at the NCVA Power League Qualifiers in Sacramento and approached the weekend with a growth mindset, focusing on swinging aggressively, reading blockers more effectively, and improving shot placement. She identified her front-row attacking as a key way she helps her team compete, while also embracing her role as a captain by prioritizing communication, emotional control, and creating space for teammates to learn and make mistakes. New to the outside hitter position after two years as a middle, Abigail is intentionally working on serve receive, defensive reads, and technical elements of her attacking mechanics to improve consistency and reduce injury risk. Off the court, she balances volleyball with qualifying for USA Track and Field Regionals, participating in a juried art show, and conducting marine research on tidepools and salinity.
