Club Spotlight - Code Blue VBC and its ties to Peru State College

Therefore, not all of our recruits live in an area close to a club program. We rely on high school film from these recruits to make our assessments, as well as building a personal relationship, and recommendations from their high school coaches. Recruits that have the resources to play on a club team, we keep an eye on their progress through the club and try to get out to see them at qualifiers. If their team does not attend qualifiers, we keep in touch, review film throughout club season, or invite them in for a spring practice.” In 2020, the Bobcats will be adding a newly formed junior varsity program. With the added playing time available, Coach Felderman recruits for all positions with priority going to hitters, followed by setters and defensive specialists. As seen with many smaller colleges in rural areas, Peru State College proves to be a good steward to give people in the area more opportunities, as a result, Code Blue Volleyball Club was formed. Started in 2012 by past Peru State College head volleyball coach Melvin Balogh, Code Blue VBC offers the club volleyball experience for players from numerous high schools in rural southeast Nebraska and a few across the river in Missouri. Current head coach Laurie Felderman directs the program and offers 4-6 teams each season sponsored by Peru State College. This year they have five teams, 2-12's, 13, 14, and 16. As a way to start their coaching experience, current and past PSU players head the Code Blue teams. Many of the student-athletes are education majors that also seek a coaching certificate. Tryouts for Code Blue are held in October for middle school and the Sunday after the state tournament for high school players. As many of the players are multi-sport athletes, they practice twice a week at the college and participate in five, silver division USAV tournaments in Lincoln and the Omaha area from January through March. Coach Felderman understands the recruitment process for multi-sport, rural players, “Although we do love seeing our recruits playing club through winter and getting touches throughout the year, we do not require it as we understand location and resources are not always available. Our rural recruits are usually multi-sport athletes, as well, so they are staying active in other sports throughout the year.
