#1 Proves to be Dangerous Place to Reside

This morning, million of Breaking Bad fans are dealing with the fact that all good things must come to an end. Meanwhile, a pair of high-profile Nebraska high school volleyball teams had to come to the same realization last week. Both Class A Millard West and Class C-1 Columbus Scotus saw undefeated seasons come to a stop in tournament play. Unlike Walter White, however, life will go on for the Wildcats and Shamrocks as both teams retained their spots atop their respective class rankings this week. At the halfway point of the season, we are down to just four remaining undefeated teams. Grand Island Northwest is 16-0 and ranked #1 in Class B and is also ranked #64 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com. St. Mary’s is 11-0 and the last undefeated team in Class D-1 and as a result moved up to the top spot in that class’s ratings. In Class D-2, both second-ranked Giltner (13-0) and third-ranked Bertrand (16-0) have yet to taste defeat. In all, five of the six teams who were ranked #1 in their class last week suffered a loss. Despite its loss to Papillion-LaVista South in the Allison Weston Invitational last Friday; Millard West is still the clear-cut #1 in Class A at 16-1. In Class B, former #2 Aurora hit a slight bump in the road at its own invitational over the weekend in a loss to Class C-1 contender Columbus Lakeview, which created a shuffle. Wahoo’s win over previously undefeated Syracuse in Class C-1 combined with Grand Island Central Catholic dropping a pair of matches to ranked teams created the shuffle in Class C-1. St. Mary’s takes over the top spot in D-1 for North Platte St. Patrick’s dropped a match to Wood River for its third loss on the season. Class D-2 also has a new #1 – Ewing – who climbs to the top spot after previously top-ranked Mead dropped a pair of matches at the Hampton Tournament.
