Match Recap: Class B, Elkhorn South vs. Gretna

In the quarterfinals match between #4 seed Elkhorn South and #5 seed Gretna, Elkhorn South won the match 24-26, 22-25, 25-14, 25-21, 15-11, three sets to two. The 4 and 5 seed match was a close one, going back and forth between both of the teams. Both Elkhorn South and Gretna had their ups and downs during the match, but the Storm prevailed.   Elkhorn South Senior setter Emily Champion and sophomore setter Emily Bay had 20 and 25 set assists, respectively. Junior outside hitter Logan Connealy had 17 kills and 24 digs. Freshman middle Rylee Gray came in second on her team for kills with 12. Riley Newton, senior libero carried her team with 31 digs. Newton is such a solid, relaxed, calm player even under pressure. Elkhorn South seemed to struggle a little defensively with a few miscommunication errors at the beginning of the match, which is unlike them. The Storm came back from a few major point deficits in the second set. Elkhorn South had some great battle in them to come back and win the match when they were down two sets to none.   Gretna Kamryn Schuler, junior outside hitter led her team with 19 kills and 44 digs. Other outside hitter, sophomore Lydia Yost had 15 kills. Libero Kenedy Schaecher had 30 digs and defensive specialist Jadyn Makovicka had 32. Junior setter Baylie Shearer closed out the match with 50 set assists. Gretna took advantage of Elkhorn South’s miscommunication errors early in the match and went on a few big point runs. Gretna’s super high energy early in the match seemed to dwindle in the third set. Gretna ran out of energy in the fourth and fifth sets and could not use their fast offense to their advantage.   Elkhorn South survives another day after their win over Gretna and get to play Skutt in the Class B semifinal match tomorrow, November 10th 7pm at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
