The shared skill-sets and responsibilities are too great to mention in full, but one major trait shared by both positions is that, because they perform their duties along the front line, height can tend to be a factor. Without out it some players fare better than others. That doesn’t make it a requirement by any means, but the facts do lean towards taller players having a greater amount of success in the up-close-and-personal parts of the game, especially when it comes to playing above the net.
On the Michigan club volleyball scene there are plenty of individuals who’ve felt that exact same sting at the 16U Level. How each athlete chooses to make their way is an incredibly individual path, but when it comes to some faces to look for making names for themselves at Outside Hitter and Middle Blocker in 16U competition those names include…
PAIGE WATERSON
Listed as both a Middle Blocker and Outside Hitter in her profile on Maxpreps.com this sophomore played 19 sets for Adrian High School in 2019-20. In that time Waterson walked away with 21 kills, five aces, one blocked shot and one triple-block to help the Maples earn rankings of 336th in Michigan and 10,163rd in the nation at 3-17-2 overall, 1-8 league. Right now she plays for High Street Athletics 16 Smack L.
ANNALIESE ELLIOT
A right-handed member of the class of 2022 according to Supernovavolleyball.com, Elliot stands six-foot-1 and attends Brandon High School. She plays Outside and Middle for Supernova Volleyball 16 UA Clarkston currently.
KEELY HINZMAN
Prior to being listed as a Middle Blocker for High Street 16 Smack L according to Highstreetathletics.com, Hinzman was in action for 126 sets with Hudson High School in 2019-20. That’s when this member of the class of 2023 raked in 173 kills, 67 blocked shots and 27 aces. In turn those efforts helped the Tigers ball out with records of 31-17-3 overall, 7-7 league, to end up ranked 140in the state and 4,148th nationally.
MADISON GRENIER
This Avondale High School member of the class of 2022 presently plays Middle and Outside for Supernova 16 UA Clarkston, where she wears number 23 . Grenier is five-foot-10 and right-handed, as well.
HANNAH PRATT
This Outside Hitter with High Street 16 Smack L spent the prep campaign playing for Western High School in Parma. A member of the class of 2022, Pratt helped the Panthers win 16 of 19 games in 2019-20. That included going undefeated in conference action to finish ranked 25th in Michigan and 1,015th in the nation.
LAILA HAMMOND
At five-foot-11 this left-hander was made to play Outside and Middle, which she does currently while wearing number 24 for Supernova 16 UA Clarkston. Hammons also attends Avondale High School and is a member of the class of 2022.
ANNALIESE LUBMAN
With the ability to line up at Outside, Setter and Defender, Lubman fills a number of roles for Supernova 16UA Clarkston. Standing in at five-foot-seven this right-handed member of the class of 2022 currently attends Avondale High School/International Academy.
Also playing Middle Blocker for High Street 16 Smack L are athletes such as Claire Lepkowski, Sarah Bieetis and Izzy Irwin. At High Street 16 Smack C that roster includes Leena Martin, Kamryn Parlin, Megann Mullins, Kimberlee LaBonte, Ella Wilson, Danyel Lincoln and Ally Hogue.
