How do they keep winning? Where is this place? Think one hour south of I-80 at the York exit to get an idea. Bruning and Davenport make up one school and Shickley the other. Sophomore Mallory Dickson states it best, “Our team is made up of 3 towns and 2 schools to make 1 team. Even though we are separated in different communities, our bonds are strong.” The Eagles compete together for sports, but against each other for choir, one-act, and speech. Volleyball practice takes place in Shickley. Before their consolidation they were good programs with a lot of history. Combined, they are on fire! BDS has been to state five times since 2011. With 30-4 records and state championships in both 2018 and 2019, the Eagles look poised for another great season under 5th-year head coach Kari Jo Alfs. Coach Alfs sums up the 2019 season best, “The BDS Lady Eagles worked hard in the summer of 2019 in the weight room, on the court and at summer camps. They were ready to take on the season. The Eagles lost 4 matches throughout the year and three of those were to teams that made it to State (Superior, Diller-Odell, and Lawrence Nelson (split played them twice.) These girls played with "heart" all year and throughout the State Tournament. It was evident as they were the first team to ever play 5 sets in all 3 matches to capture the 2019 State Championship Trophy. They started the State Tournament down the first two sets and rallied back to defeat Bertrand opening night. On Friday the girls fought off several match points in set 4 before rallying from behind to win the fourth set and dominate the fifth set. Saturday was no different as they were down in the 5th set of the Championship Match against Humphrey St Francis 4-8 before winning the Championship 16-14. These girls were always up for a challenge and did a nice job of staying composed in tough situations. The Eagles had three seniors on the roster in 2019, with one of them playing all 6 rotations. We will miss Senior setter/outside hitter Regan Alfs to graduation. She was a very smart player on the court and was a key contributor to the 2019 season. However, each year our seniors always seem to rise to the challenge. I am really looking forward to seeing our seniors step up in our 2020 season!” What comes with championships? A LOT OF HERALDED PLAYERS!!! The Eagles return two seniors, power hitter [player_tooltip player_id="58212" first="Macy" last="Kamler"] and setter [player_tooltip player_id="78627" first="Jordan" last="Bolte"]. After graduating a setter/hitter in their 6-2 offense in 2019, it is yet to be seen if they switch to a 5-1 this season. Only time will tell! There is never a dull moment on the court with my twin cousins Mariah and Taylor Sliva, you can always catch us during a drill, game, or practice being silly. But coach always says, "You play your best when you are having fun." College volleyball or basketball for Macy? “Yes I am planning on playing volleyball and or basketball in college. I have not signed yet, I am still waiting to go on a couple more college visits. I am hoping to make a decision by December 2020.” ⇒[player_tooltip player_id="78627" first="Jordan" last="Bolte"] | 2021 | 5’5" Setter and Outside Hitter Two-year starter <a href="https://www.hudl.com/profile/9602481/Jordan-Bolte">HUDL Highlights </a>Club: South Central 17 Black 2019 Awards: LJS, OWH, Hastings Tribune, & CRC Honorable Mention All-State 2019 Stats: 81 kills 414 assists 25 aces 192 digs Playing a 6-2 the last couple of years, Jordan reflects on her setting career, “Freshman year was the first year I started setting so I had to learn the aspects of setting. During that year we had two really good setters, Jadyn Kleinschmidt and Regan Alfs, that I was able to watch and learn from. This really helped me develop my skills in setting. Sophomore year and junior year I started as a setter for the varsity team. Being from a Class D school we all have grown up with each other and know each other very well. There doesn’t have to be prizes involved and everyone will go 100% because we all don’t like to lose. I also like how while we are competing we can still have a lot of fun and joke around with each other.” ⇒Taryn Fiala | 2022 | 5’6" Libero Starter 2019 Stats: 123 digs Taryn on the 2020 season, “I think we will have a very successful season. We lost a few starters but other than that we still have the majority of our main players. I think if we work really hard again this year and push ourselves that we can win state again for the third year in a row!” ⇒Malory Dickson | 2023 | 5’10" Middle Hitter Starter Club: South Central 15 Black 2019 Stats: 26.5 blocks 19 kills Malory describes her team, “My teammates are amazing. The connection that we have is like family. Even though we come from different schools and communities, we have a connection that other teams can only wish they have. We have the drive to win even what seems to be a hopeless situation. Through ups and downs we can still cheer each other on, laugh, and have fun together.
