Here are five underrated 9th Region seniors-to-be.
Ellie Orchelle: An outside hitter, Orchelle is a student-athlete from St. Henry High School. A hard hitter, Orchelle logged 164 kills and 161 digs in 2019. Orchelle, who appeared in 34 of St. Henry’s 35 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season, produces regularly wherever she is on the court and reads opposing defenses accurately.
Kennedy Schmitt: An outside hitter/defensive specialist, Schmitt is a student-athlete from Cooper High School. Schmitt took the floor in each of Cooper’s 35 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season, registering 162 kills and 79 digs. A strong hitter from the right side, Schmitt uses her athleticism to make challenging digs routinely.
Lizzie Thomas: A middle hitter, Thomas is a student-athlete from Villa Madonna High School. A key contributor, Thomas recorded 63 kills, 54 blocks and 18 service aces in only 74 sets for Villa Madonna during the 2019 prep volleyball season. Thomas, who appeared in all 33 of Villa Madonna’s matches in 2019, provides a strong presence in the middle and thrives when setting up blocks and blocking.
Lauren Welch: A defensive specialist/libero, Welch is a student-athlete from Ryle High School. Welch appeared in 36 of Ryle’s 37 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season, posting 118 digs. Poised to finish her prep career strong as a senior, Welch possesses solid passing and defensive skills and continues to improve prior to the 2020 season.
Laura Winkler: A middle blocker/right side/setter, Winkler is a student-athlete from Highlands High School. One of the most versatile volleyball players in the 9th Region, Winkler contributed for Highlands throughout the 2019 high school volleyball season, recording 158 kills and 75 digs in 104 sets. Winkler, who appeared in all 37 of Ryle’s matches in 2019, excels attacking the ball when she receives a set and delivering from the role of a setter.
