The [program_tooltip program_id='941254' first='Thoroughbred' last='Volleyball Club'] in Georgetown started off a recreation league called the Phoenix League as another option for players to pursue club volleyball in an affordable way.

Gary Bond said he and his wife Kari run the club that is in its second season at cost, adding they do not make anything off it. Bond said the plan is to stick with one or two teams. Bond credited Alpha founder Michael Ortman for helping out whether it is running drills or bouncing questions off him. The teams play in a lot of local tournaments in places such as Lexington trying to develop their skills.

Bryan Station freshman middle blocker/defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='986817' first='Summer' last='Hayden'] and Great Crossing freshman outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='986819' first='Kinslee' last='Broce'] lead this team.

Eighth grader Nikole Beltran, who will attend Great Crossing in the fall, plays all the way around in every role minus setter. The Phoenix Horizon Academy freshman Alana Withers plays middle blocker and Great Crossing freshman right side hitter Skyler Sprouse rounds out the roster.

Rodney Mason is the team's head coach.

Phillips (pictured) is a nice all-around player for Navy Crush 63. She takes nice swings and executes both bump and overhead passes well. Coach Gary Bond said she can improve at hitting harder and increase her vertical jump. Coach Bond also noted she's been setting most of her career because she has good hands, but has moved to outside out of necessity.

Bond excels at serve reception and passing. She anticipates well, then sets her feet to make quality passes. Bond makes sound out of system passes back toward the net and sends free balls back across the net with a purpose. Coach Gary Bond said serving is an area of improvement, citing the need to be more aggressive there.

Hayden brings great athleticism to the Navy Wave 72 with her hitting and passing. She does a great job placing balls. Hayden can fake the cross then turn and hit balls toward the side lines. Hayden is encouraging on the court and sends free balls across with a purpose.

Broce is in her second year playing volleyball. She's developed great athleticism from her time playing softball. Coach Gary Bond commended her for learning a lot in those two years. She makes nice touches on first contacts and cheers on her teammates well. Coach Gary Bond said he hopes to see her read the court better, which will come with more experience.
