About Sophia

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I am a smart outside hitter with high volleyball IQ who is actively transitioning into a full time L/DS role. Because I've spent so much time as a pin hitter, I have lots of experience with finding smart shots, reading/setting up the block, and moving quick on defense. I also love taking on the challenge of passing tough serves and am incredibly calm under pressure.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I’m love volleyball so much and I'm super focused on constantly getting better. I’m always working to improve my game even when I'm off the court by doing consistent weight training, plyos, and getting extra reps or touches at home. I love the grind, I take feedback really well, and I'm always ready to put in the extra work for my team.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

Academic excellence is a major priority for me. I am a two-time Summa Cum Laude recipient on the National Latin Exam, maintain a 4.0 unweighted GPA, and balance my rigorous high-academic coursework with a heavy national-level club volleyball travel schedule (I have 40 absences this semester alone from volleyball!).

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

Playing high-level volleyball and working on group school projects has taught me a lot about trust, accountability, and teamwork. Outside of school and sports, I volunteer a bunch at different places, like helping run a kids summer camp and sorting clothes at local donation centers. I definitely want to step into more leadership roles as I get older.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

My biggest challenge right now is starting the process of switching my position and my mindset from being a front-row attacker to a full-time Libero/DS. It’s a completely new way of looking at the game since I'm used to swinging, but I’m super excited to outwork everyone, lock in on my ball control, and master defense from the ground up.

What type of college are you looking for?

I'm looking for a highly rigorous academic school where I can challenge myself in the classroom but still play at a super competitive D2 or D3 volleyball level. My goal is to find a program that truly values the balance of a student-athlete.
