About Abney

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

Volleyball is the love of my life! As an athletic setter, I have a high volleyball IQ, great court awareness, & I communicate well. I focus on being a leader by example & building my teammates up. I am able to read the block & set the correct set/hitter, vary tempo, & keep all hitters involved. I serve, defend, pass at a high level & have good instincts in reading shots & setting up strong blocks.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I am very competitive, but I also have so much fun playing volleyball with my teammates! I'm very focused & remain calm & steady even in the most intense matches. As a setter & leader, I always encourage my teammates, lead by example, & communicate. I make smart choices in crucial moments & move on to the next play when I have an error.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I am an Honor Roll student, member of the Beta Club, and participate in varied service opportunities.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

High level volleyball requires leadership, teamwork, and communication! As a setter, I have learned how important it is for me to lead by example while building my teammates up so they can do their best. If we make a mistake, I focus on encouraging my teammates with positivity and confidence that we can make the next play and win the match! By leading, I am also able to serve others!

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

Competing for the setter position against 2 upperclassmen as a freshman. It definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone! The hardest part was finding my voice as a leader. I had to learn how to communicate confidently with older teammates while still being respectful & kind. This has taught me how to lead with humility & build trust with my team. I also have 2 older brothers...does that count?

What type of college are you looking for?

I am looking for great schools with strong academic programs, support for their athletics programs, and a desire to recruit and develop high level student-athletes who are coachable and show high character in all that they do. I also want to attend a school where I can contribute as we set aspirational goals that we can meet together through hard work, dedication, and execution!
