The Middle Activator

Alex Serina made sure her middles were featured, not forgotten. Her quick sets were deliberate and sharp, arriving at optimal height and tempo to keep blockers honest. By consistently establishing the center of the net, she widened seams for pin attackers and diversified scoring patterns.

What impressed most was her commitment to balance. Even after high-percentage swings to the outside, she circled back to the middle to prevent predictability. I just saw Alex a couple weeks ago at the Stock Up Showcase and she got a good write up from Bob. She showed good hands and defense, and her IQ is top notch. I didn’t get to see a ton of the game with my attention split, but I could see a little bit of the DS/L in her game too, making some tough digs and contributing on defense. Being from PA, I doubt I will see her through HS season, but I’m looking forward to seeing her at the next PrepDig Showcase and more next season, as I’m a big fan of defensive setters in this evolving game.

Alex came from Pennsylvania to attend this event, making her the lone player outside the DMV. She certainly held her own against the DMV competition. Her 5’8″ height with good hops showed up early when she roofed a much taller player while playing front row. It also appears she sets a 5/1 where she sneaks in a few one handed pineapple dumps into area “4”.

Alex showed soft hands and excellent location with her sets. She also kept up with the liberos when playing defense when taking a break from setting. It would not surprise me to see her set for Parkland as a frosh.
