About Alexus

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I would describe my gameplay style as very quick and smart. When the opposing blockers are leaning towards a certain pin ready to block I will often set the hitter they aren’t prepared for. I do this to try to give my hitters a chance of having an open net to hit from. I also see the open spots on the court when we are in a close game and I will use a setter dump in campfire or deep corners.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I would describe my personality and mentality as calm and focused, but with a little bit of fire. When my teammates get incredible digs and outstanding kills, I will always be there cheering as loud as I can. Being loud and supportive for my teammates not only helps build momentum for our side of the court, but is a confidence booster for my teammates.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I have received an all honors award for maintaining good grades and I received “Student of The Month” from my high school for being a positive and hardworking student. I also have coached little girls how to play volleyball and help out with food drives when needed.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I have been captain on my school and travel teams ever since I was young, which allowed me to build a strong bond with my teammates and have lots of communication. Now this year has been different because I am on a new team with different people. Although I am not captain this year, I still maintain that leadership role due to the fact I am a setter and I have a big role on the court.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

I haven’t faced any significant challenges.

What type of college are you looking for?

I am looking for a college that has a great business and medical program. I am still deciding on which career path I want to follow between those two. I am also looking for a college that has a welcoming team and coaching staff.

Finding them in the right situations and at the right times is tough, and Miss Shepherd was spot on while running the offense to one of its best matches of the season.

Most 15U setters are pretty repetitive in what they set – mostly outside, with a few sets to the middle sprinkled in on perfect passes. Alexus is not your normal 2028 setter. She likes to run middles fast AND when she’s off the net, pushing the 31 set especially, at a nice quick tempo. Shepherd, also sets a very consistent set to the RS, giving her hitters the ability to hit line often. A lot of the reason that Alexus has the ability to run a balanced offense even when she is pulled off the net is her fundamentals – she quickly gets to the pass and squares up before she sets. Lastly, Shepherd can be offensive too. She has a very deceptive two-handed dump to the middle of the court that she doesn’t overuse but uses at the right times.
