About Arlene

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I’ve grown up on a volleyball court. I don’t ever remember a time that I wasn’t watching or playing volleyball. I have been described by my coaches as having incredible physicality. I’m an aggressive attacker and I love to work with my setter to move the ball around and try different offensive plays. My blocking is one of my strengths, as well as my accuracy in serving.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I love to make people laugh. My teammates can always count on me to make a funny face at the right time to lighten the mood if it gets tense. I’m good at letting a bad play go and moving on. I’d consider myself to be extremely competitive and I have high expectations of my teammates and myself. But with that said, I’m very encouraging when I see anyone getting into their heads.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I’m involved in my church, I play varsity beach volleyball, varsity flag football, and I maintain all As and Bs and am on the honor roll at school.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I feel that each practice and game I get more and more in tune with my role as a leader. I also feel like I do an amazing job lifting my team up from the sideline when I’m on the bench. I love cheering on my team and filling their cups. I enjoy doing community service through my church and school, such as food pantries, mission trips, and local outreach projects.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

I’ve had an amazing upbringing and home life. Personally for me, the biggest mental challenge has been comparing myself to my older sister. She is about to go to college as a Division 1 libero. As an athlete, when I was just starting out, I always compared my journey to hers. Now I’ve moved past that. It helps that I’m now 7” taller than her!

What type of college are you looking for?

I would love to play Division 1 volleyball somewhere in the southeast US, preferably Florida. It would be my dream to attend FGCU or UCF as I’m currently interested in marine biology.
