About Avery

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I am very fast and agile with quick hands and I am looking to run as fast of an offense as my team is able to run. My goal is to better the ball each time I touch it and to really and try and trick the defense. I play with a lot of energy and hustle.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

My mentality and personality is extremely competitive!!! However, I am also very grateful for every day on this Earth and every opportunity I am given since I am a cancer survivor. My twin brother and I were also born at 26 weeks gestation so it is a miracle I am even here. I try and get 1% better every day and I just love this sport! I am so thankful and blessed that I get to play and compete.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I am part of the All A Honor Roll and was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. I am also involved in our church and I volunteer every Sunday that I am in town. I am also proficient in Mandarin Chinese as I attended a Mandarin immersion program throughout elementary school. I attend Ridge Haven Community Service project every summer where I spend a week doing manual labor to give back.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I have learned through very hard work that I can lead by showing my hustle and grit during every point. I also know that as a setter I need to remain relaxed and calm. I have been voted as the MVP and captain of my middle school volleyball and basketball teams because of my leadership. I also volunteer every Sunday at my church.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

I have faced many significant challenges. First, I was born at 26 weeks weighing one pound 13 ounces. The NICU nurses said they had never seen a baby that tiny that could move the way I did! Then at 9 years old I was diagnosed with cancer. For 2 1/2 years I had horrible treatments and at times I could barely walk down the street. I am a cancer survivor and I know I can always do hard things!

What type of college are you looking for?

I am currently in the 8th grade and I just know without a doubt that I want to play volleyball in college!!!
