Austin Kingsley | Prep Dig Scout
Sure, Hollatz isn’t necessarily a full-time setter for Clarkson/Leigh. We saw the kind of damage she can do as a right-side hitter, even in out-of-system situations. It’s hard to find setters who are also the second-leading scorer for their team, but that’s the kind of all-around impact that Hollatz offers. She has one more year prep season to keep the momentum rolling.

We’ve alluded to Hollatz’s dual role with Clarkson/Leigh, but it’s worth rehashing here. The do-everything junior has spent her entire prep career in the Patriots’ starting lineup, primarily as the team’s setter. But, in addition to her savvy distribution and consistent location, Hollatz has also mixed in a front-row attacking niche to her repertoire. She’s hitting for a high efficiency amid all these responsibilities and should have another shot at a state title this November. Clarkson/Leigh has been here before.

We were already aware of Hollatz’s smooth touch as Clarkson/Leigh’s setter. However, the Patriots have shown a new wrinkle in 2023 with Hollatz being fully unleashed as an attacker in addition to her setting role. She’s pounding down nearly two kills per set while still maintaining her strong grasp over the offense. This aggression is paying dividends with a season that’s been full of winning—and only winning.

Clarkson/Leigh returns to the discussion with Hollatz boasting some impressive totals last year. She was the other C2 setter to average over ten assists per set alongside Rennerfeldt. The Patriots also get some lockdown right-back defense when Hollatz rotates to the end line.

Clarkson/Leigh deserves a lot of praise for its multi-year run to the state championships, and Hollatz has had a steady hand in that success. Her setting was particularly sharp during the 2022 season as the Patriots benefitted from a balanced, ever-evolving offense. We anticipate more of the same from Hollatz and Clarkson/Leigh with a great core group of players coming back.

While Clarkson/Leigh’s frontcourt hitters get a lot of the hype, Hollatz’s steady leadership at the setter spot cannot be overlooked. The sophomore standout piled up nearly 1,000 assists this fall en route to yet another state tournament appearance for the Patriots. Expect a similarly successful 2023 with nearly the entire Clarkson/Leigh roster returning.
