About Kaitlyn

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I keep a level head and a calm demeanor, but that doesn't keep me from cheering on my teammates, even from the bench. I recognize that my position requires ultimate speed and reflexes, and to achieve that I always bring plenty of aggression and awareness to the court.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

Volleyball is the main source of my confidence, that being said when I step on the court I have nothing but belief in myself and my teammates. This does not change when I make a mistake, because I remind myself that quitting does not earn progress. I've put in countless hours to reach the position I'm in, and reminding myself of that work before a game motivates me to play my best.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I've always been very serious about school, earning myself the Character Counts Award in 8th grade, I was runner up in the nation-wide Letters About Literature contest in 7th grade, and I've been on the highest honor roll every year since 6th grade. This work paid off this year to earn me a 31 on my PACT, a 4.0 GPA, and a spot on the IVCA Academic All-State Team.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I love taking part in philanthropic activities; just last month I participated in a bake sale to raise money for homeless students at my high school, which I had also done the year before. I've also donated my hair once to Pantene and twice to Children With Hair Loss and volunteered several times at Almost Home Foundation for pets. These experiences have taught me the importance of selflessness.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

I was cut at the first day of volleyball tryouts in 6th grade - the first year I showed interest in the sport. I had wanted to be on the team so bad, and the rejection had broke my spirit until my parents signed me up for a park district team. I carried the chip on my shoulder throughout the season, and by the end it was clear to me that this would be more than just a sport to me.

What type of college are you looking for?

I want something that is roughly a 6 hour drive from my house at most, but I am not afraid to push past this limit. Location or campus size are not major concerns of mine, because if I'm playing volleyball I'll be happy anywhere. My main concern however would be finding a college that is able to balance a major like nursing with a college athlete schedule.
