Austin Kingsley | Prep Dig Scout
Furstenau jumped onto our radar after her exceptional stay in Lincoln for the 2023 state tournament. The Elgin Public/Pope John libero helped her team secure an upset victory in the quarterfinals, and Furstenau has kept climbing since that postseason stint. She wrapped up her career with a whopping six digs per set for the second consecutive season, pushing her career total to nearly 1,500. Small-town liberos are always a memorable part of our in-season coverage, and the Wolf Pack boasted one of the state’s best.

Libero representation has arrived. Furstenau was last year’s defensive leader for Elgin Public/Pope John as the Wolfpack emerged as a Class D1 Cinderella team. EPPJ has brought the same energy to the 2024 Class C2 field, and Furstenau’s has kept racking up big numbers. She has averaged six digs per set, setting up her team for innumerable transition opportunities. The Wolfpack are looking for a final surge and enter the week at No. 9 in the wildcard race.

Like many of the athletes on this feature, Furstenau made a huge impression at the 2023 state tournament. She was the anchor to Elgin Public/Pope John’s defense and finished with some of the state’s highest dig averages. That trend will likely continue this fall after she churned out 23 digs against Lutheran High Northeast. We always have to watch the small-town schools for defensive talent, and Furstenau is gaining serious momentum among the 2025s.

Elgin Public/Pope John’s head-spinning defensive totals would not have been possible without Furstenau spearheading the effort in the libero jersey. She surpassed 500 total digs in her junior season as the Wolfpack clawed their way to the Class D1 semifinals from the #7 seed. We knew Furstenau had been dominating the stat sheet this year, but seeing her skillful defense in person affirmed where those big numbers were coming from.

Furstenau entered the 2023 tournament with one of Nebraska’s loftiest dig totals. She eclipsed the 500-dig mark during the postseason and kept building on those numbers as EPPJ scored the quarterfinal upset over Southwest. Look for more of the same during Furstenau’s senior campaign next fall.
