The senior middle blocker had somewhat of a slow start, not getting much involved in the first set, but when she got going, Rugley became a real difference-maker for Pearland. She was very solid offensively and once she got into a rhythm, Cy Ranch’s blockers had no answers to her high contact point and heavy right arm. Rugley also made a major impact with her blocking, getting several stops and scoring points in key moments. Every block she got ignited a good run of points for the Oilers, who fed from their middle to keep fighting until the end.

One of the top middles in the region, Rugley is one of the cornerstones of her Pearland team. Her presence at the net makes the team much stronger as she is able to impact the flow of the game both ways with her physical game. Rugley first emerged as an elite blocker and continues to perform as so, moving with great quickness at the net and being aggressive with her arms when it comes to taking up space from opposing hitters. Her offensive game made great progress over the years and she’s now very effective with that too, hitting different sets in the middle and swinging with tremendous power.

Rugley and her AVA TX 17 Adidas team were third last weekend, with four wins and two losses. The middle was huge for them, proving an excellent blocking presence with her ability to read the game and get into the right spots to make spots at the net. Rugley was very productive offensively as well, making contact with the ball at a very high point and swinging with incredible power, at times sending the ball inside the 10 ft line. The middle also had some good serving runs and got to make some nice digs at the left back position.

Rugley and her AVA TX 17 Adidas teammates will battle in the 17 Open division. She emerged as one of the top middles in Texas in her age group a couple of years ago mainly because of her big, aggressive and efficient blocking. Rugley reads the game well and is mobile with her movement and intelligent with her decision-making when getting stops at the net. The middle has shown great improvement in her offensive game lately, developing the ability to hit different sets and increasing her scoring production.

Rugley is a big part of a strong AVA TX 16 Adidas team that has been among the best in the Houston area this season and will contend in the 16 Open division in Atlanta. Although she’s very strong on both sides of the ball, it’s Rugley’s blocking that stands out the most. She really has everything in her game when it comes to shutting opponents down, from being a good jumper and having long arms to reading the game well, timing her jumps and doing an excellent job with her hands to take up space from opposing hitters. She’s also a very strong offensive player who can hit multiple sets and is very difficult to stop when she gets into a rhythm.

I had been trying to watch Rugley in person for quite some time and she definitely didn’t disappoint in her first impression. I knew that she was an excellent blocker, but she’s actually even better than I thought as she’s a tremendous jumper and has excellent timing and reading of the game. Her offense is extremely strong as well as Rugley puts a lot of intensity into her approach and is capable of hitting different sets with great power and to different directions.
