Makenna Murphy
About Makenna
Expert Analysis

Another setter who stood out on day one was Makenna from Ascent 17. She was running a very crisp and well balanced offense throughout the day. She was very impressive with her soft hands, and being able to run the middle for a good part of the day on a bunch of different sets. As a setter being able to establish her middle early made life really easy for the pins hitters as the day progressed. She is also athletic enough and strong enough to make the tough set across the court and not take the easy set. Her court IQ was on display as she made sure to get the right hitters the ball when needed. She also stood out with her ability to play the whole game as her defense and serving were also top level. If she plays like that the next two days, we could see Ascent make a deep run here in Vegas.

“I think it’s a great step towards my future, and I’m really hopeful for what will come after this AVCA Phenom showcase.”
She highlighted offensive distribution as a strength she relied on in competition. “I’m proud of how I mix the offense around, and I think seeing holes in the other team’s defense sets me apart when I compete.”
When offering advice, Makenna emphasized staying grounded in personal growth. “Don’t compare yourself to other players. You are where you need to be, and if you keep working toward your goals, things will fall into place.”

Makenna is had a standout season, elevating her team with poised leadership and high-level play in every match. Earlier this year, she orchestrated a signature 3–1 upset over Round Valley, using sharp offensive decision-making and a fast tempo to keep opponents off balance. Her ability to run a quick, unpredictable offense—combined with her well-timed dump attacks—consistently throws off opposing defenses. She helped guide her team back to the state playoffs, where they battled No. 4-ranked Trivium through three tight sets.
Her individual numbers this season speak for themselves. She’s currently ranked #1 in assists for the 2A conference and 7th overall in the state of Arizona. Defensively, she was a rock, keeping her team in system with 246 digs. From the service line, she delivered 50 aces, and at the net she added 36 blocks. Even while running a demanding 5-1 offense, she still produced 66 kills of her own. Makenna ends her high school season with a remarkable 2,198 career assists as only a junior—902 of those coming from this season alone.
Makenna’s performance this year was a true showcase of her talent, versatility, and leadership on the court.

Makenna Murphy has made a name for herself in 2A volleyball. She had a big hand in leading her team to the state play off quarterfinal against PCDS in 2024 as a sophomore. With great location and tempo, her quick offense took the eagles to 5 games, almost eliminating them from the tournament all together. She’s well surpassed 1000 assists in her career and is tracking to hit 2000 by her senior year.
Will Makenna and the Northland squad break that quarterfinal game this season? Time will tell!
