About Mikal

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I would describe my gameplay as fluid and smooth. I can get to a variety of spots when it comes to setting. My sets are clean and smooth, reaching the target perfectly.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I would say my mentality has gotten a lot stronger. With my teammates, it allows me to gain back any confidence I lost when they reassure me. My personality in game is definitely confident and encouraging. I’m always picking up my teammates when they make mistakes, and I’m leading them towards our victory. I describe myself as a leader, someone who will take the responsibility for the team.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

No, I am not.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I have definitely learned more about leadership and community. My team struggled first with tesmwork a little bit in the early season, but once we started gameplay together, I realized so many different things about one another that I would share to them about how we could bond more. Leadership has definitely changed me, I am more of a natural leader on the court, instead of being shy.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

Yes, back on my 14’s regional last year, my coach was very difficult. He mostly yelled at us and we weren’t able to take in the coaching advice he would try to deliver. I was also dealing with some hard times at school, and was a little depressed. Later into the season I sprained my ankle in game and my coach blamed me for it, saying if I had ankle braces it wouldn’t have happened.

What type of college are you looking for?

I am looking for an open minded college. Someone who won’t just see my height and brush me off instead of looking deeper into my skill. One of my influencers in life is Lindsey Berg, because she was one of the shortest setters to make it to the Olympics. I want to be her one day, not just showing off my height, but my skills.
