SubscribeThe 17s/18s Division at the Wisconsin Juniors Winter Classic was loaded with many athletes who were committed to their future schools, but there was definitely some sleepers that caused a few eyes to turn. Taylor Seney of Wisconsin Juniors 17-1’s was very impressive, a prototypical middle, quick on her feet and a high touch. Her progress will be fun to watch throughout the season.
V-Hawk Xteme out of La Crosse was a very fun team to watch with a combination of players from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Two of their top players in the front row happened to be from the Class of 2020 which Prep Dig will feature later in the week. One of the best matches of Saturday was an extremely competitive battle with VHawk falling to Juniors 2-0 with set scores of 27-25 and 25-23.
This was also the debut for Milwaukee Sting 18 Silver which is comprised of plenty of college bound players in the Class of 2018 that will play more of a regional schedule. Ryleigh Vaughn and Jessica Grabowski will head to UW-Milwaukee and DSHA libero Grace Novotny will play on the pin for Silver, is heading to Michigan Tech. Annie Pulizos of Greendale was very dominant in the middle has committed to Purdue Northwest along with teammate Bryanna Moonen out of Franklin.
Here are a few more athletes who shined at the 17/18s Division of the Winter Classic.
Taylor Seney – WI Juniors 17-1 – Middle Blocker – Oak Creek
Seney is an athletic 6’1 Middle Blocker for WI Jr’s 17-1 that is extremely fast and plays high on the net. She was a 1st Team All Conference player for Oak Creek in the Southeast Conference in the Milwaukee area. Seney is definitely a sleeper on the rise in the Class of 2019 with her athleticism. She would be one who could possibly even see time on the pin with her jumping ability. Keep an eye on Seney as the club season progresses.
Heidi Compe – 17 UA Wisconsin Performance – Middle Blocker – DeForest
Compe is an extremely dynamic and athletic in the middle for WI Performance UA. This team. Compe’s team was able to win the Silver Division of 17 Club. Compe, being from DeForest will team up with Capital 17 Adidas Sopheea Mink which will be a great 1-2 punch out of the middle for the Norskies.
Ellie Westrate – Wisconsin Select – Setter – Lakeside Lutheran
Committed To Calvin College
Westrate was a setter on Lakeside Lutheran’s state championship team from this past fall. Very athlete who can also swing a bit, but a great has great hands. Calvin College is a NCAA Division 3 powerhouse, she will be on a team that will compete for National Championships right away.
Kenzie Winker – VHawk Xtreme 18 – Outside Hitter – Holmen
Committed to Viterbo
Winker is a high flying outside that could possibly play on the right side as well. VHawk was a team that continued to improve throughout the tournament, after dropping a tough match to WI Juniors in pool play, they were able to come back and win the Silver Bracket on Sunday. This team will be fun to watch progress through the season as they continue to see top competition in Open play throughout the season.
Mari Crowley – VHawk Xtreme 18 – Libero – Winona Cotter (MN)
In Wisconsin, we can claim Crowley, she’s from Fountain City along the Mississippi River, plays for VHawk Xtreme, but goes to high school in Winona, MN at Cotter which is a Catholic High School. Crowley has great feet and a solid platform. There wasn’t a time where I saw Crowley out of position, she had great fundamentals and would be a great pick up at the next level. Very athletic, quick, and highly skilled!
