Although the field is small, Allen Park high school will host a few of our top D2 programs with Ida and Grosse Ile in the tournament field. Solid teams like Trenton and Woodhaven are also looking to prove themselves early this season. Flat Rock and host Allen Park round out the field in the 6 team round robin format. In this format, each team will play a best of 3 match against the other 5 teams. Winner of the tournament has the best record at the end. We are not sure of the tiebreakers to determine the winner.
Players to Watch in the tournament – Ella Bailey OH (Allen Park), Madeline Douglas L (Trenton), Bailey Wilson MH/S (Trenton), Carly Doros MH (Flat Rock), Olivia Alexander OH/MH (Woodhaven), Taylor Wegener OH/MH (Ida), Meg Balogh OH/RH (Grosse Ile)
Tournament Favories:
Ida – Taylor Wegener is a true competitor. Her energy and athleticism has led Ida to a great start to the season and they are looking to continue that Thursday.
Trenton – Led by Wayne St. commit Maddy Douglas, Trenton will be tough to handle on Thursday. In a unique roll, Bailey Wilson will take on the role of playing middle and setting for Trenton.
Other teams to Watch – Grosse Ile and Woodhaven
Predictions
Because this is a round robin, every team will play 5 matches and have a shot at everyone else. The winner of the tournament will have the best record. Here it goes!
1) Ida (5-0) – Taylor Wegener and company are too much for the field. They will have their hands full with Trenton but find a way to win in 3.
2) Woodhaven (3-2) – Olivia Alexander shows why she is one of the top players in the Downriver league as she leads her team to a 2nd place finish.
3) Trenton (3-2) – Although they finished tied with Woodhaven, Trenton lost the head to head tiebreaker to Woodhaven losing that match in 3.
4) Grosse Ile (2-3) – Grosse Ile stays competitive throughout the day but just does not have the firepower to compete.
5) Allen Park (1-4) – Allen Park just cannot compete physically to the top 2 teams. They compete with the others but fall short.
6) Flat Rock (1-4) – Flat Rock is in rebuild mode with new Coach Mackenzie Kaiser. Carly Doros is the real deal but the team will struggle to get her the ball at times.
