Continue ReadingThe jump serve has become the 3-pointer of volleyball. While serving has always been an important part of the game, it has evolved. Thinking back to the old scoring, if you couldn’t make your serve over, you couldn’t score. Today the service game is much more complex. From jump serves, spot serving, float, top spin, side spin, and short serves, players are learning one of the easiest ways to get points is from the end line. And these teams and players have tapped into the secret of serving.
1A:
Grand Meadow: This team wipes away the confidence of their opponents one serve at a time. So far the Superlarks have over 175 service aces collectively. Defensive specialist, Meghan Eastlee,is not only a digging machine in the back row, but offers offense with her serves; she already has 58. Teammate Jordyn Glynn is close behind with 57. Allie Sloan and Allie Lubahn have tough serves too. They live up to their reputation of being strong farm-girls.
Fillmore Central: This is a team effort in Fillmore. Senior, Paige Donlinger, has already tallied 55 service aces. Stella Schrufer and Madison Scheevel have both aced their opponents over 40 times so far and KJ Thorson and Hadley Yoder both have close to 30 aces. Because of their tough serving they have been a challenge for much bigger, higher ranked schools. They took one set from the Stewartville Tigers (ranked 1 in 2A) on August 28th. In that match they managed to ace the perfected passers of Stewartville 7 times. Madison led the way with 3 serivce aces. They also beat 3A school John Marshall. They had a serving percentage of 85.% and ace percentage of 10.6%. They currently are undefeated in the Three Rivers Conference and serving is a big part of their game.
Other note-worthy servers in class A include: Imijyn Thompson-Floodwood; Cora Kujava-KCC and sophopmore Bailey Schaefer– Brandon-Evansville.
2A:
St Peter: They currently lead the Big South (East) Conference, narrowly beating out Waseca. They have already aced the competition 147 times. That means 147 points were scored instantly by an individual. So in theory, they have won 5 whole sets by serving alone. The top three are Brielle Bushaw (jr.), Allie McCabe (jr.), and Claire Nuessmeier (sr). Not only do they produce points, but they rarely miss. They are consistent with their ball placement and don’t miss at important times. This is a testament to their mental toughness.
More top servers from 2A: Rachel Huseth- Cannon Falls; Bailey Berge– Kasson Mantorville, Ashley Kendall-Dover Eyota, and sophomore Kira Fallert– Concordia Academy.
