Team Detroit Volleyball is a program that had a strong 2018 club year, putting up some national championship banners for themselves while establishing some of their squads among the best in the state of Michigan. The program is hoping to create more success in 2019. Here’s a look at their Red teams that will lead the way.

18 Red

Coached by Joe Podvin this year, this squad is comprised of 75 percent of last year’s 17 Red team that earned an AAU Nationals title in the Club division and a USA Nationals title in the Patriot division. Of the new additions, one is at setter where Kristen Jankowski joins the squad. An Eastern Illinois commit will have a lot of great hitting options to work with, including new faces Madeline Hudson in the middle and Nicole Orvis on the left. Brenna Murphy is also a new face that can play a number of positions while bringing her tough serve to the team. Red 18 will have a steady defense behind returning libero Madison Benoit (Wayne State), who had a great club season last year. Haley Blaney will handle DS responsibilities. Olivia Vance (Toledo) returns in the middle and will be a lot for opponents to deal with while Ella Loussia and Olivia Cristian return on the outside. Julianna Pence is a returning setting option as well that will help Red 18 play a very fast tempo.

17 Red

Veteran coach Dave Nichols will be running the ship for 17 Red this year and he brings a lot of promising talent with him to the court. On the outside, he has Raeleen Sobetski, Jordan Newblatt and Riley O’Connell who are coming off really strong performances in the fall prep season. In the middle Anna Loughrey and Mackenzie Keck will handle duties while Shelby Dundas can play middle and OPP. Eleanor Knight is also an OPP option. All of the hitters will be set up by Juliana Dunning, who has proven to be very steady with her feeds. In the back row, Madelyn Weiss and Sedona Coon will be the primary passers and be up for the challenge of all the top hitters they will face.

16 Red

Sandi Lynch will coach this year’s squad. The unit has plenty of new faces and a lot of flexibility with the lineup, as most players have experience at multiple positions. Delaney Desano-Smith and Rylee Herrick are primary setters, but Miah Scarchilli also has experience setting while playing libero. Courtney Farrugia will join Scarchilli in the back row as the team’s primary defenders. When it comes to hitting, 16 Red has a lot of it and can mix and match their hitters around the court. Emma LaBarge, Kaitlin Showalter and Mia Genitti all can take over the middle and outside and deliver. Paige Weeder is a six rotation option while Lindsay Hubler and Catherine Dobies can play either side of the net. Once 16 Red can really iron out the lineup, it should take off.

15 Red

Derek Ledwidge coaches this group of first-year high school players that are coming off a Patriot Division national title at the USAV nationals last year. Defense and serving should be the foundation for this team, led by Hanna Rutila and Sarah Calanchi in the back row. From the attack standpoint, 15 Red has some athletic pin hitters led by Julia Fledderjohn, Leah Fontaine and Ava Petrucci, who can all play six rotations. Elizabeth Kitchen is a new addition on the outside as well, who brings some added height and blocking. Paige Geiser and Erin Morrisey are new additions in the middle while Juliana Imbuzerio is the veteran leader at the position. Rachel Karr will be setting all the hitters. A left-handed setter, Karr is an aggressive setter and server that will be a big asset to the team.

14 Red

Malia Gabel coaches this young squad a year after leading the 14 Red team to championships in 2018. For the age group, 14 Red has a lot of height and athleticism to work with. That starts in the middle with Kendyl Owens and Isabella Harding. They will be big keys to the offense. Calista Cranson and Braedy Winneman are the setting options, but both have a lot of offensive instincts as well. This squad is deep with pin hitters behind Evelynne Oegema, Kayla Munson, Alexis Barber and Sienna Dailey. There is a lot of depth and power in that foursome. Kayleigh Podolski and Megann Brennecke are former hitters that moved to a primary defensive role, but their abilities give the team a lot of flexibility in terms of lineup.
