Continue ReadingIowa had its success this past weekend in Omaha at the Northern Lights Qualifier/January Thaw with Iowa PowerPlex earning their opening bid. With a roster full of household Iowa volleyball names, their success definitely has Iowa on the map on a national level, however there are plenty of Iowa teams and athletes who are making their mark on the rest of the club volleyball scene. IPVA, Midwest Volleyball Power (MVP), Iowa Rockets, Iowa Elite, and other Iowa teams were competing among some of the best in the midwest. Here are a few standout performances from some of the Iowa clubs this past weekend.
Kenzie Foley – MVP 18 Blue – Sergeant Bluff-Luton – Outside Hitter
Class of 2020
Foley is a six rotation all around player who is deadly to score from any spot. A major part of the SBL volleyball program’s rise to compete with the best in the state, Foley has the all around skills to compete with the best around. MVP out of Sioux City has a plethora of athletes from Northwest Iowa and South Dakota who are competing in the 18s division while many of the athletes would be at the 16s and 17s level. Foley will continue to be a go to player for MVP as she primes for a solid Senior season at SBL.
IPVA 17 BlackKara Peter – IPVA 17 Black – Carroll Kuemper – Middle Blocker/Right Side
Class of 2020
Aimee Adams (Iowa PowerPlex/South Dakota) wasn’t the only Kuemper star in Omaha this weekend. Kara Peter of IPVA 17 Black was a major force at the net. Peter is the type of player who could play anywhere in the front row and be a threat to score and also bring a huge defensive presence. At 6’3, she can move and jump, such great athleticism. This past season for Kuemper where she was part of a state championship team, Peter had 381 kills hitting .462.
Anna Godfredsen – IPVA 17 Black – Dowling Catholic – Outside Hitter
Class of 2020
Another athlete to play in the state tournament this past fall, Godfredsen is a force on the left side with an explosive swing. Playing a big part in the run to state for Dowling, Godfredsen is another athlete who will be primed to breakout her Senior year and look to lead the Maroons back to the state tournament.
Madison Harms – Nebraska Elite – Sergeant Bluff-Luton – Middle Blocker
Class of 2019 – Committed to South Dakota
Coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance, South Dakota is picking up some big time Iowa players in Madison Harms and Aimee Adams (member of Iowa PowerPlex) who were in Omaha this weekend. Harms is one of the top athletes in the state of Iowa being a state high jump champion and along with Foley, was a major part of the SBL rise to prominence in Class 4A in Iowa. A middle who has a quick jump and extremely high contact point has such a snap of the ball that the ball is down on the ten foot line before she has even landed. A dynamic and just a fun athlete to watch, she will be a huge addition as a Coyote and build off their 2018 tournament run.
Sydney Hearn – Adrenaline 17 Adidas – Independence – Libero
Class of 2019
Hearn is a solid and dependable libero who is going to make all the routine plays look easy. A major part of Independence’s run to the state tournament, Hearn will be playing at the 18 Open level for Adrenaline this upcoming season and would be a great catch at the next level. Great libero play can often be mistaken by the diving into crowd saves, but what coaches are looking for are efficient movement and a solid platform. Hearn proves she has just that and more.
Taylor Wilshire – MVP 18 Blue – Sioux City Bishop Heelan – Libero
Class of 2021
Wilshire is playing two age levels up being a Class of 2021 prospect at the 18s level. The Heelan prep has great movement out of left back where she covers a ton of ground and just has a cool, calm, collected style of play. Heelan has always been one of the top programs in Northwest Iowa and somehow the road to state goes through them or SBL. Wilshire will have two more years of high school ball to continue to develop into one of the best liberos in the area and will be one to keep an eye on.
Kylie Welch – Iowa Rockets 17-1 – Davenport Assumption – Outside Hitter
Class of 2020
Welch is an outside hitter with a huge swing, she brings an aggressive style of play to the court where she can hit the seam or use the block to her advantage. Welch was a big part of Assumption’s run to state where she led the team with 258 kills on the pin and a team leading 58 aces. She will be primed for a big Senior year for the Knights.
Khaylor Fleck – Iowa Rockets 17-1 – Solon – Libero/DS
Class of 2020
Solon is always full of athletes and Fleck is no different. Fleck is able to hold down the backrow for Iowa Rockets 17-1 with an athletic style of play and provide a solid first contact. Rockets also have a strong presence in the front row with Breanna Ver Meer who is a solid blocker and strong swing on the right side. Over the weekend Rockets had two big wins over Northern Lights 17-R and a tough three set loss to instate rival IPVA 17 Black.
