As the first day of practice draws closer, the members of the MN Volleyball Coaches Association have weighed in with their top picks for each class. While these are only predictions based on the popular vote, it sets the tone for the season for teams trying to live up to the rankings and others who will play the role of the underdog.

Take for example, Class 1A:

1. Kenyon-Wanamingo

2. Medford

3. Mayer-Lutheran

4. Minneota

5. Water-Elysian Morristown

6. Mabel-Canton

7. Ada-Borup

8. Caledonia

9. Carlton

10. Henning

No huge surprises here with five of the listed teams having a state tournament appearance last year: Minneota (state champs), Medford (second place), Ada-Borup, Carlton, and Mayer Lutheran. However, The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights must feel great about the recognition and the top spot ranking. Last year their season ended with a tough playoff loss to Belle Plaine, but keep in mind that was in 2A. This year KW is set to shake things up in 1a. They return key players: Ally Peterson, Julianna Boyum, and Madi Luebke. They will start the 2019 with eighth ranked- Caledonia. This match is sure to be a great indication of how well teams can match up.

Don’t sleep on some of the other top contenders: New York Mills, Carlton (5th seed at state tournament last year, and BBE. Prediction: look for Mabel Canton to upset some teams ranked higher. They have developed a strong tradition and always shows up when it matters.
