As we approach the qualifier portion of the club season, there are plenty of solid defensive specialist/libero options for the 2021 class. We chose to list those that are ONLY training as a DS or Libero for the 2020 club season, as those players that are training as front-row options might not have ball control high on their priority list.

[player_tooltip player_id="85678" first="Jenny" last="Morey"], Munciana, Yorktown High School

Whenever you mention Yorktown, you mean to say "volleyball school". The greatest pure passers in the state come from Yorktown, including both primary passers from the 2018 state championships, who are now full-time liberos at Nebraska and Ohio State, respectively. Jenny is on that track, and she is regularly one of two passers in serve receive at both the high school level and at the club level. A note to all opposing coaches, DO NOT SERVE HER.

[player_tooltip player_id="85681" first="Taylor" last="Lauri"]e, Circle City, Hamilton Southeastern High School

The lone junior on Circle’s 18-1 team, Taylor runs the show at HSE and has received exceptional training from some of the best in the state. Her steady, always-reliable serve receive is only surpassed by her ceaseless motor on defense. She is a definite leader in the back row, and certainly doesn’t play like the baby on her club team.

[player_tooltip player_id="85689" first="Lexi" last="Brehl"], Academy, Carmel High School

[player_tooltip player_id="85711" first="Bella" last="Schumacher"], Academy, Brebeuf High School

I put these two together as a reminder that they (1) play on the same team at Academy, the 17 Tsunami (17-1), and (2) they are the reason this team wins. Both have worn the special jersey at one time or another this club season, and both are responsible for their early season success. Neither are flashy, neither are "look at me" types; both do the job, and do it well. I wish I could pick one over the other, but they’re better together.

[player_tooltip player_id="85721" first="Jennifer" last="Pitts"], Team Indiana, Zionsville High School

Jennifer is listed as both a defensive specialist and as an outside hitter on TI’s website, but in this author’s opinion, she’s a D1/D2 DS, and a D3/NAIA OH. The best part is that she can do it all, and is with a coach in Michelle Coleman that will let her. Serve receive, defense, attack from both pins....put her in there, and it gets done.
