All across the state of Michigan there are Setters from the class of 2021 putting in some impressive work.
One thing that separates all that talent from one player to the next is exposure. Some get it more than others. Right, wrong or otherwise, that’s just the way it is. Not every 17U Setter in the state is going to get her proper due.
Within that realm are a host of sharp-shooting, high-flying and ever-working individuals just waiting to break out, some of which even have game film and stats available on Maxpreps.com, such as…
SOPHIA POWELL
Because of her deft touch and intuitive feel this Setter from Lowell High School exhibits as much power as she does precision. The front row is her domain and in 2019-20 in prep action Powell played that role to the tune of 1,571 assists during 146 sets of competition. That was in addition to the297 digs and 166 kills she chipped in to help lead the Red Arrows to ending their campaign ranked third in the state and 97th nationally with a record of 55-4 overall, 12-0 league. Presently she takes the court for the Far Out Volleyball Club’s 17 Black.
ELLA DAVENPORT
If this Troy High School junior can get underneath a ball for the dig, she will. That could mean one hand or two depending on the circumstances. Adding to that talent is the fact she has the skill to dive effectively, an ability that only gets put to use in the direst of situations. Perhaps it’s that choice to go all out that’s allowed her to thrive with the Michigan Elite Volleyball Academy’s 17 National East squad.
GRACE ALLREAD
Defensively this five-foot-ten West Bloomfield High School member of the class of 2021 has range that extends from one sideline to the other. At the net Allread works well in the corners and uses the angles to her advantage. Even though she plays for Legacy 17-1 ADIDAS right now, during the prep season what she was up to was knocking down 161 kills, 808 assists and 239 digs in 111 sets played.
JULIA BISHOP
Distributor is the term best used to describe this athlete. To prove it during the high school season with top-ranked Mercy in Farmington Hills this member of the class of 2021 proved good for 1,038 assists in just 98 sets played. Having also rained down 132 kills and 208 digs this five-foot-11 Setter currently plays for Michigan Elite Volleyball 17 Mizuno.
GRACE SINICROPE
Even though she’s now a member of the Far Out Volleyball Club 17 Red, during the high school season with Catholic Central in Grand Rapids Sinicrope absolutely rose to the occasion. One strength she displays is the willingness and ability to move to wherever she’s needed for as long as she’s needed. This junior also gets low on the dig rather quickly both on serve receive and when on the wrong end of an opposing spike.
Some other 17U Setters worth knowing in the state include Rosie Bracken of Michigan Elite Volleyball Academy 17 National East and Ashley L’Esperance and Jenna Szabelski, who compete for Michigan Elite Volleyball Academy 17 National West.
