The class of 2021 includes some of the greatest athletes in Minnesota volleyball. Among them, is a talented group of setters who demonstrated leadership, perseverance, and athleticism. As they prepare for their biggest season yet, we want to draw attention to 4 senior, setters each week, who are committed to making their last year their best.

Peyton Evanstad (cover photo)

Well known and well recognized at 6’, Evanstad has been a top player for the last several years. Her time at Northern Lights has given her the skills and exposure to continue on at University of San Diego following high school. In the meantime, her senior year will be spent fighting beat top threats in the Big 9. Last year, ended with a surprising loss against Rochester Century, proving Evanstad will need more help from her young teammates in 2020. Accompanying her in the setting position are seniors: Bennett Wolff and Ellie Glendie. If they are able to utilize them it will free up Evanstad as an attacker.

Look for: Evanstad to lead kills and blocks.

Macaela Nelson

Nelson will step up and in as a primary setter for Alexandria this year. In the past she has shared setting duties, but was utilized more for her strong defensive skills. With Erika Roderick graduating, the Cardinals will rely on Nelson to be the leader. She is ready to run the offense on her own if needed but is one of their top passers on serve receive too. Either way, we know she will have her hand on every play this upcoming year.

Look for: Nelson and [player_tooltip player_id="72835" first="Maggie" last="Anderson"] (2022) to be dynamic scoring duo.

Ashley Paul

This senior from St. Charles, Minnesota has shown that her athleticism makes up for being one of the shorter setters on our list. At 5’6’’, the Saints continue to run a 5-1 with Paul because of her speed and jumping ability. She has improved her accuracy and has a great understanding of which teammates to set up. Teammate, Lindsey Root (leader in kills for the Saints), and Paul have a strong relationship that is essential to their team.

Look for: Ashley to lead the team in service aces.

Mckinley Schreurs

Last year, Schreurs helped Russell-Tyler-Ruthton finish fourth in the Camden South conference. She demonstrated great leadership especially with five underclassmen on the team. RTR improved their offense with faster sets from Schreurs last year. She shares the setting role with younger sister Lexi Schreurs (2023) who saw a great deal of playing time even as a freshmen.

Look for: The Schreurs sisters to fight to be in conference title match.
