We’re getting there. Almost ready to go back to being in gyms and evaluating on a regular basis. Even in these no-play times, we still have kids that need a college home. Here are five setters in the class of 2021 from the Hoosier State that need some recognition.

[player_tooltip player_id="85691" first="Caitlin" last="Murphy"], 5-7, Brownsburg, Team Indiana 18 Elite, Prep Dig #24

The shortest in today’s list gets my attention. All of these kids can locate a ball where their hitters need it, and run an offense on top teams against top competition. What sets Caitlin apart from most is her ability to play defense, her quickness to get to every pass, good and bad, and her volleyball IQ. Making the right decision at the right time earned Cate the opportunity to play up a year this past club season.

[player_tooltip player_id="85696" first="Paige" last="Conklin"], 5-8, LaPorte, Dunes 17 Black, Prep Dig #29

The definition of no-nonsense, Paige does her job well, without flair and without undue attention. A nose-to-the-grindstone gym rat that will do everything in her power to will her team to victory, without complaint. I had the pleasure of watching her play in March, and her team was getting punched in the mouth. She still went 100%, regardless of where the pass was, and made a ton of bad balls better for her attackers. What more could you ask for?

[player_tooltip player_id="85698" first="Bella" last="Dearinger"], 5-10, Delta, Munciana 17 Pandas, Prep Dig #31

Absolute fire. A heart-and-soul type of leader, Bella is fully capable of running an offense just as much as she can shove the ball down your throat. Her leadership and passion can carry a team, and she’s more than capable of running a quick offense. I can’t wait until August when I can see this kid play again.

[player_tooltip player_id="85704" first="Olivia" last="Phillips"], 5-11, Hamilton Southeastern, Munciana 17 Pandas, Prep Dig #39

Smooth to the ball, smooth hands, smooth play. The ’yin’ to Bella’s ’yang’ on the Pandas, Olivia is more of an offensive setter than average, and is smart with her placement. Cool, calm and poised, Miss Phillips is also from a winning program, with HSE making a state championship match appearance last fall, and looking to do it again. It will be interesting to see how much development Olivia has had during this pandemic; the top setter in my ’22 class is also from HSE.

[player_tooltip player_id="85725" first="Sarah" last="Weglarz"], 5-9, Westfield, Academy 17 Elite Tsunami, Prep Dig #63

Unassuming, doing her job, fast and athletic---do you sense a pattern here? This class in Indiana is filled with setters who can get the job done at a high level, and without much flair (except for Bella; that girl is FIRED UP!!!). She took a reduced playing time role with the Tsunami just to get better training. Who knew that her team was so good that she’d get enough playing time to get on this list? I like her attitude, and I love her abilities. She’d be a great fit as either a 5-1 setter or fit into a bigger team’s offense as one of the setters in a 6-2.
