2023 Rankings: Breaking down the top 10

This week we released our first Class of 2023 rankings, highlighting a number of talented volleyball talents in the state. As with any new rankings, there's a lot to discuss. Here's a closer look at our top 10. 1.[player_tooltip player_id="66319" first="Harper" last="Murray"], OH Skyline/Legacy There's not much debate in this one. Murray has clearly established herself at the top of the Class of 2023, and is near the top of the Class of 2023 list nationally. An All-State season for Skyline as a freshman was followed up with a perfect club season in the shortened 2020 campaign with Legacy 15-1 Adidas. 2. [player_tooltip player_id="66309" first="Nina" last="Horning"], OH Lake Orion/Legacy [caption id="attachment_99425" align="alignright" width="266"] [player_tooltip player_id="66309" first="Nina" last="Horning"][/caption] Horning stepped up in a big way for Lake Orion in 2019. She was a standout freshman while helping the Dragons reach the D1 semifinals. She was also part of the unbeaten Legacy 15-1 Adidas squad during club season and has added a lot of new pieces to her game in the last year. 3. [player_tooltip player_id="66292" first="Rebecca" last="Apsey"], RS Groves/Legacy Apsey really has shined as an RS. She played with a lot of confidence as a freshman at Groves and then proved to be a perfect compliment to Murray on the Legacy 15-1 Adidas squad during club season. Apsey is a finisher and is only going to get better. 4. [player_tooltip player_id="66308" first="Kaitlyn" last="Hoffman"], L/DS Clarkston/Legacy Hoffman hasn't had the chance to showcase her skills on the varsity level, but her play for Legacy 15-1 Adidas couldn't be overlooked. Hoffman made every big play in the back row while facing the best the Class of 2023 has to offer nationally. She's battled-tested and ready to shine over the next 12 months. 5. [player_tooltip player_id="66325" first="Abigail" last="Reck"], MH Northville/Legacy It should be a big year for Reck, who will get a chance to show what she can do for Northville this fall. An athletic and composed middle, Reck really came through for Legacy 15-1 Adidas during the club year. She raised her game to the level of her teammates and it gave her a lot of confidence moving forward. 6. [player_tooltip player_id="66340" first="Sarah" last="Vellucci"], OH Novi/Legacy Vellucci is a dynamic player that can play in the front row or the back. She found ways to contribute for Legacy during the club year while being a power arm for Novi as a freshman. Vellucci was given a chance to shine for the Wildcats, and did just that. Big things are ahead for her. 7. [player_tooltip player_id="66328" first="Ava" last="Sarafa"], S Marian/Michigan Elite [caption id="attachment_109029" align="alignright" width="221"] [player_tooltip player_id="66328" first="Ava" last="Sarafa"][/caption] Sarafa settled into the starting setter role for Marian as a freshman and helped the Mustangs be a top contender in D1 in 2019. After a solid club year with Michigan Elite 15 Mizuno, Sarafa looks far more composed and confident on the floor this fall. 8. [player_tooltip player_id="66291" first="Laurece" last="Abraham"], MH Country Day/Legacy Abraham is part of a stacked roster of hitters at Country Day and with Legacy, but her explosive talents make it nearly impossible to keep her off the court. The competition is forcing her to raise her game, and you can see the growth. Abraham has a very high ceiling and could be moving up these rankings quickly. 9. [player_tooltip player_id="66313" first="Erin" last="Kline"], S Mercy/Legacy Kline is another standout for Legacy 15-1 Adidas. She ran the offense flawlessly and is definitely a setter to keep an eye on in the upcoming years. At Mercy, Kline is behind one of the best in the state in [player_tooltip player_id="14163" first="Julia" last="Bishop"], but she's getting a great education before she takes over the offense in the fall of 2021. 10. [player_tooltip player_id="66296" first="Skylar" last="Bump"], S Lakewood/FaR Out Bump was given the keys to the Lakewood offense in 2019 and she helped the Vikings reach the D2 state final. Bump has some great hitters to work with at Lakewood and FaR Out 15 Black, but her setting is what has helped them become great hitters as well. Bump learns quickly and plays with a lot of speed and tempo.
