Meet & Greet C-1 State Volleyball: Broken Bow Indians

#7 seed Broken Bow (29-4) After a strong season in 2019 (33-4) and graduating many key players, coach Skylar Morris wasn’t sure what to expect this season. And wow, have they surprised her!! The Indians made it back to state with wins over Ainsworth (14-9) and O’Neill (19-12) in the sub and Oakland-Craig (22-7) in the finals. Coach Skylar Morris comments, “We are excited for the opportunity to continue our season. This group of girls continues to play as a team and continues to surprise us in multiple ways. They are having fun and making sure to be grateful that we are at this point in our season. Excited for the week.” Returning starters for the Indians include sisters Kya Scott (2022, 5’7, OH, 4.0 kills/set) and [player_tooltip player_id="58813" first="Kailyn" last="Scott"] (2022, 5’5, setter, 9.7 assists/set). Add in Kali Staples (2021, 5’7, OH, 2.6 k/s), Emma Schall (2021, 6’1, M, 2.1 k/s), and Calli White (2022, 5’6, M) in the front row and Cami Schweitzer (2021, 5’2, Libero) and Emma Taylor (2024, 5’4, DS) in the back row to round out the Indians. #7 Broken Bow faces #2 St. Paul (32-0) in the first round on the south court at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln at 2:00. The competitive spirit will be high in Lincoln this week! But, really, it all comes down to these young ladies being great stewards of the sport and we appreciate them for that. Volleyball proves to be a big part of their life, but read on and you might learn a little more about these athletes. Their ever-thinking minds are amazing! Let’s meet the team: What were your initial thoughts after you won match point in districts? Kali Staples - It was surreal and didn’t really sink in for a while. Emma Schall - wow... we just did that... again. Kya Scott - I was in shock and couldn’t believe we made it for the second year in a row. [player_tooltip player_id="58813" first="Kailyn" last="Scott"] - We did it! We made it to State once again! <hr /> What is the most exciting part of state volleyball that you are looking forward to? Kali Staples - Being able to keep competing with my team Emma Schall - the big atmosphere Kya Scott - I love staying in the hotel with my team and playing at PBA with such a big crowd. Kali Staples - Our community is very supportive. They pack the stands full at every game Emma Schall - starts with a send off the day we leave. then everyone loads up their cars, and heads to Lincoln to cheer us on. Kya Scott - They give us a huge send off, an escort out of town, and pack our stands. [player_tooltip player_id="58813" first="Kailyn" last="Scott"] - They give a send off at the school and then they pack the stands at state and cheer us on <hr /> With teams only allotted a certain amount of tickets, who do you want to make sure gets one of those tickets and why? Kali Staples - My parents, I want my them to be able to watch me compete at state. They have came and supported me at every game. Emma Schall - my mom and dad, and anyone in our student section Kya Scott - Family, they have supported me throughout my high school career. [player_tooltip player_id="58813" first="Kailyn" last="Scott"] - My family because they have supported me throughout my three years of volleyball <hr /> What is the best advice anyone has given you in volleyball? Be sure to include who gave you the advice. Kali Staples - To just go out and play, we aren’t playing for the crowd, the coaches, or anything else. We’re playing for ourselves and for the girls on the court next to us. Coach Hunt Emma Schall - one of our assistant coaches always reminds us, volleyball is a game of mistakes, it’s not fun when you’re making all the mistakes, so go out play a clean game and have fun Kya Scott - Play till the whistle [player_tooltip player_id="58813" first="Kailyn" last="Scott"] - Relax and have fun out there. You only have so much time to play with the teammates you have. My coaches gave me this advice. <hr /> Any advice you would give to young girls on how to have a great volleyball experience in high school? Kali Staples - Don’t put too much pressure on yourself just have fun and enjoy every moment with your team Emma Schall - just enjoy it. all of it. you’re gonna miss the feeling of playing volleyball and playing with your team when it’s over Kya Scott - Enjoy the time you have, it goes by really fast. Enjoy the ride together. <hr /> Give us one positive comment about one player on your team. It can be the goofiest player or just someone that deserves a shoutout. Kali Staples - Kailyn is always laying herself out for balls and getting on the ground. Her hustle helps the team so much. Emma Schall -[player_tooltip player_id="78693" first="Molly" last="Staples"] is our biggest cheerleader, she’s always pumped for games and hyping the team up on the bench Kya Scott - I want to give credits to our freshman starter for stepping up because the role needed to be filled, and she filled it well for just being a freshman.
