Excuse the bad pun, but the first national qualifier is a big deal and always exciting when teams start seeing other top squad from across the country. The Mideast Qualifier in Indianapolis will have top teams from the Midwest and Mideast, but will also welcome some top squads from Texas as well. The Great Lakes Region will be well represented and here are some teams in the 15 Open Division who are going to be ones to definitely have on the radar.
Hannah Hosty and Gabriella Woltman – Michio 15 National
Michio has a really athletic lineup all around. Hosty is an extremely active in the middle where she can get from pin to pin, closing the block and also allowing herself to become available to transition and attack, she plays with a high motor and works hard to do all the dirty work that is required of middles. Woltmann is on the pin, she is an attacking and blocking presence at the net and is definitely looked at to score points for Michio. This team will start out MEQ with the top overall seed with KC Power Friday morning.
@ Adversity _vbc has a duo of lefty’s in Nicole Cornell and Ana Vetter who are going to be really exciting to watch at the 15s level this year!

Ana Vetter – Adversity 15 Adidas
I have a good feeling about this Adversity team. I think they are going to continue to get better throughout this season and are capable of knocking off some big teams. They were a nine seed heading into the final GLR Qualifying weekend and finished second. Vetter is a long, athletic right side attacker who can really reach for a high contact point. She has a fast arm and her upside is scary with her intangibles. Between her high contact point and swing, it makes her tough to defend. Adversity is the second seed in their pool and has the second overall seed in the tournament with Dynasty out of Kansas City at the top.
Payton Mandac – Uno 15 Elite
Uno is always up for playing against the best competition and will continue to improve throughout the season. They have an athletic setter/combo type player who can play multiple positions in Ava Grevengoed, but one of the top point scorers would be outside hitter Payton Mandac. Mandac hits a heavy ball and is aggressive with her approach and her swing. She can play in the backrow as well and with continued training is definitely capable of being one of those point scoring threats in all rotations.
Ruth Ziegler – Sky High 15-1 NS
This team plays with so much energy, they thrive off the momentum and scoring runs. With plenty of athleticism and height, they are a threat against any team. One attacker they will rely on is Ruth Ziegler who is 6’2 out of the middle, but has demonstrated she can attack from multiple places whether its the pin or right side. This front line also includes Nora Larson and Makayla Weissenberg on the right side where they can really spread the defense because they are all capable of scoring points.
Berkeley Ploder- Sky High 15 Adidas Black
Schmidt will be playing out of the middle where she is extremely athletic and dynamic. She moves really well laterally, allowing her to have quite a range with her block and get her hands high very quickly. Another plus is her window she can hit from. She can adjust while in air to make the most out of the set whether its to get the defense out of position or to find an open corner. If Sky High can stay in system and get Schmidt involved she can be very dominant.
Kinsey Smith – Lions 15-1
Lions 15-1 is coming into the field as the number 11 overall seed, but after seeing them at the GLR, they are definitely going to be in the hunt come Sunday with their overall balance, quick tempo, and athleticism. One of the main catalysts for this group is Kinsey Smith who sets mostly out of the backrow, but sets the tone as the first server typically putting pressure on the other side and is one point with every tempo. With her athleticism and quick feet, she can get her hands to the ball and is jump setting every chance she gets. Such an exciting squad to watch.
