Midseason Update: Illinois setters to watch

<p>As we hit the mid-season marker for high school volleyball, we dive in and see what setters are setting the way for themselves and for their teams. These five athletes serve as important assets to their teams, as not only are they outstanding athletes, but their teams are a part of the top 10 ranked high schools in Illinois this current season.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Jessie Timmermann</strong>- Mater Dei High School</p> <p>Timmermann is one athlete that shows up and shows out when she steps on the court. Standing at 5’11”, the setter has impressive athletic abilities as she is able to play primarily in the setter position but is used as a OPP. Timmermann has a very powerful and dominant right swing and is able to go right in for the kill. Timmermann is an important key player for her high school having a shot at the state title. Over Timmermann’s two years on varsity, she has been able to secure 917 assists, 35 aces, 262 digs and 133 kills over 91 sets played. Timmermann is a skilled athlete and multi-position athlete that allows her to have range on the floor and range in skill set.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="61517" first="Rachel" last="Muisenga"]</strong>- Benet Academy</p> <p>Standing at 6’0”, Muisenga is an athlete that doesn’t fail to shine light on herself when she steps on the court. Muisenga is a powerful setter and an important key component to her team’s successes with her athletic ability. She is an attentive and alert athlete and is quick on her feet when it comes to moving with the flow of the ball. Muisenga brings light to her athletic abilities as she has a strong swing and is capable of being a leader for kills for her team. During Muisenga’s time on varsity, she’s managed to play 186 sets with 867 assists, 72 aces, 289 digs and 273 kills.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Lauren Bloom</strong>- Rochester High School</p> <p>Bloom is a developing athlete that is one to keep an eye on throughout the remainder of the of the season and during her summer season. Bloom is a special asset to her team as she plays as both a setter and a DS, which reveals the range of Bloom’s athletic skillsets. Bloom is a very alert and attentive athlete when it comes to following the motion of the ball and has a very strong swing when following through with a kill. Bloom currently has 11 aces, 8 kills, 48 digs and 179 assists with 30 sets played. Bloom has managed to play 113 sets in her two years on varsity, with a total of 688 assists, 37 aces, 190 digs and 32 kills. Bloom is going to be an athlete to continue to follow.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="61650" first="Jayden" last="Flynn"]</strong>- Belvidere North</p> <p>Flynn is an outstanding setter that is one to watch as she continues her season with her high school, moving into her summer season for her club season. Flynn is a very active athlete on the court, as she moves with the flow of the ball and is able to read the floor when there is a live ball. Flynn has a powerful set, and her ball handling skills are precise and consistent. Flynn has a strong set of hands and doesn’t let her team down when it comes to setting a kill. Flynn is one athlete that is still developing in her craft but continues to noise when she steps onto the court.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Natalie Edson</strong>- Centralia High School</p> <p>Edson is a very impressive athlete when it comes to her athletic abilities and her putting them to use on the court. Standing 5’6”, Edson is very swift and alert when it comes to her ability to follow the ball and is quick to defend the ball when her territory is threatened. Edson has been seen in 23 sets with 19 kills, 16 aces, 80 digs and 257 assists. Edson is a key component to her team, as she is the leader in assists and digs for her team. Over her two years player varsity, Edson has managed to collect 1081 assists, 64 aces, 285 digs and 64 kills over 103 sets played. Edson can read the floor well, has amazing ball handling skills and has impeccable defensive players. Edson is one to watch throughout the remainder of the season.</p>
