Because of their size, they were never allowed into any of the county competitions (1A, under 300 students total). Fast-forward through all of their hard work and years of perseverance, and they won a first round matchup against Indian Creek (3A!) last fall and finished with a 21-9 record overall. Like every team, however, graduates move on, as did 80% of GCA’s offense. Who can fill the void?
’23, Olivia Shingleton, 5-7 OH
Probably the most consistent player on this squad is a primary passing, six rotation player that will be relied upon to carry the lion’s share of the offense. Her attacks are smart, she receives serve better than most on the roster, and can bomb away from behind the baseline, as she did for the majority of this past Thursday. I have hope that she’ll get some help this fall.
’22, Dory O’dell, 5-10 MB
The only player with any reasonable size on this roster, Dory is a big presence at the net with a high swing and a ton of energy. I like that she can move laterally to block on both pins, and her blocks, along with her attacks, are terminal.
’24, Naomi Hillenburg, 5-4 DS/L
Consistency is what will drive this program after last fall, and it starts with the first contact that Naomi can touch. Her footwork is good, she moves quickly, and can cover some of her teammates inconsistencies in coverage. She might have to get used to taking more court to receive serve, but that experience will come with time and reps.
